Hi everyone, have a quick question for all-

We have a female husky, 3 yrs. old, interested in getting another husky, another female. we have heard opinions on getting another female, either no don't do it, they will always fight, and also from people who say all they have ever had are females and they are fine. Am I getting myself into trouble or just paranoid??

Thank you in advance!!

call and ask several breeders of this kind of dog. tell them you are calling for someone else a friend or uncle or something and you are helping them.Call a responsble breeder who does health testing not some average joe in the paper who threw any 2 dogs togeather. all breeds are different. in Dobermans 2 males is asking for blood but i have 3 females and no problems at all depends greatly on the breed. so call and ask they will let you know.

I have heard that multiple females can be trouble. But, like anything else, it also depends on the particular dogs.

I would do as Marcia suggested and call a reputable breeder or breed rescue and see what they say. You will also want to test your dog together with the new dog and evaluate how they interact. After getting burned in this area myself, I would also suggest bringing a good behaviorist with you to observe the two dogs together.

If the particular female you are looking at does not work out with your dog, I would not rule out females altogether. Every dog is different.

Hey there. I have two Huskies(a male and a female) but I have had them since puppyhood. This breed can be complicated sometimes. As for whether to get a female or male, it all depends on the personality. I have seen two females get along and also two males. One of them is going to establish themselves as alpha over the other no matter what. I think that if you are going to get a second dog, you should gradually introduce them over a period of a week or so. These are just a few tidbits. First, you need to start on neutral territory and see how they get along. When at home let them get used to each other's scent through a door or a crate. Maybe crate the new dog to let your old dog get used to his presence. I would not suggest introducing them right off the bat. It may start a nasty fight.
I want to suggest this site to you: www.everythinghusky.com
This is a great site with lots of info on Huskies and Husky behavior. The messageboard (everything husky forum)is great and if you look through some of the threads there, I think introducing Huskies has been addressed recently. The people there are great (like at this board too!) and can help you with any Husky problems. There is lots of people with experience at this board and I highly suggest it!

Someone once told me to rub baby powder into both animals' fur before you introduce them, so they smell alike. Does this have any validity, I wonder? You'd think that they could still smell each other's unique scents even with the baby powder on, but perhaps it dilutes it or something.

We have a coonhound shepard mix female, a cocker beagle mix female and they get along great. The cocker is our older dog and she is the alpha for sure. She cows the big dog out of the food sometimes and the big is twice her size and younger. They never fight or growl at one another. Yesterday I got a sheltie terrier mix female and they are all 3 wagging their tails at one another. Good luck to you!

We got our female husky because she did not get along with my friends other female husky. I think as karrie said it depends on the dog. I have other females in the house and it took some time for them to establish who was alpha. The husky won but it was rough at first. Anyway good luck in your search! Also that website karie suggested is a good resource for huskys. I love it!
