If anyone has a Pekingese, can you please tell me what it likes to eat. I have one and he does not touch dog food. I have tried fat, oil, meat juice, broth and nothing seems to work. I am starting to think that it is just this breed. Thank you for any information you can offer. IP: Logged |

I have never heard of liver sprinkles, but he does not like liver or liver snacks. In fact he doesn't even like any kinds of snacks that i have tried. I got a really picky dog! IP: Logged |

Maybe you could heat the food? It is ment to release smells and make it more interesting to eat. Liver sprinkles are ground up liver treats, my dog loves them. Dont give up! IP: Logged |

Tina, My aunt has a very picky shih tzu...she has tried many, many foods and the only food this dog will eat on her own is Solid Gold Mmellenia. You may want to check out this sight also... http://www.westielovers.com/westieworld/picky.html IP: Logged |

Thank you and that sight is helpful, I think that I might try it. But, does anybody know a certain dog food that is really good that I should try? To mini pony gal, I do heat up his food often, that's basically the only way he will eat. Except it's my food not dog food, I tried with warm fat/oil in the dog food but he wasn't that interested. I will have to ask my neighbor what her peke eats. My two dogs have loved Innova for the past two years. They never turn their noses up to it. Irishdancer: do you really do the Irish jigs? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I've tried a variety of dog foods over the years, but I've found that my peke likes chicken-based foods best. He has eaten Science Diet Sensitive Stomach for quite some time and did very well on it. Semi-recently, I switched him to Wellness Super5Mix (human grade chicken rather than by-products). It's a baked kibble that he seems to enjoy a lot when I pour a little bit of warm water over it and mix it for 10 seconds by shaking the food bowl before serving it. The back of the bag suggests that doing so will release the full flavor and aroma of the food. Extruded foods like most of the ones I'd fed previously don't seem to make that nice gravy-like liquid when I mix in the warm water. (When I fed SD, I sometimes mixed tiny bits of dog jerky or other soft dog snack, which he loves, into the food to get him started - he then seemed to realize that he was hungry.) Wellness is also more nutrient-dense, so it's quite cost efficient (because you feed less). If your dog is reluctant to eat a lot of dog food, perhaps it's a good idea to invest in a more nutritiously dense diet. You can check www.ohmpet.com for the ingredient list, calories, nutrient breakdown, etc. if you're concerned about food allergies and other issues. Another thing you might want to look into is dog food rolls (like Oinkeroll, Lambroll, Natural Balance). I haven't fed them personally, but I've looked at Natural Balance's line and it seems quite good in terms of having an animal protein as 1st ingredient (though the protein percentage might be a bit low for a young dog, especially one that isn't too fond of food). Perhaps it would be good for as something to mix into dry dog food to make it more appetizing? http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/ By the way, if you're constantly changing foods, your dog may "hold out" for something better. Mine tended to do this quite a bit until we caught on to his tricks and stayed with a diet for a bit longer than a few days. If you've been feeding him people food, he probably knows quite well that your food tastes better than his! It might take him a bit of time to give up and start eating dog food. That Pekingese stubborn streak is charming but also a bit exasperating sometimes! I hope this helps! Good luck with your search! IP: Logged |
