I rotate my dogs food and it's that time again so I was looking at some of the new ones out there. I was thinking of trying the Natures Variety dry kibble so I checked out the ingredients and noticed there was 0% listed for taurine. I know this is essential for cats, but wasn't sure about dogs so I went looking for info. I found an article that confuses me a little, so I thought I would ask... http://www.petcarenaturally.com/book_health_bible.php The article says that some good sources for Taurine are Meat, fish and eggs....Natures Variety kibble says "Fresh meat is the first ingredient in each formula. Meat and organs make up nearly 40% of the ingredients in each production batch of Nature’s Variety. Most dry, kibble diets are 25 to 30% meat or meat and bone products with some formulations even containing less than 10% or even no meat products. Formulated to meet the needs of all life stages."...now if this is true, then wouldn't there be taurine in the food? There is also Menhaden fish, Salmon Oil and Whole Eggs listed in the ingredients...so why does it say 0% for Taurine? Next, I have read conflicting information on Taurine in dogs, some say it is needed some say it is not. My aunt who breeds Danes won't feed a food without it. Does anyone have good information on this topic? IP: Logged |

quote: Im thinking this may just be a typo on their website because the Chicken formula lists .06% taurine but the beef and lamb both list .00%. Maybe you can send them an email and ask to find out for sure? Also, I don't think taurine is yet recognized as an essential nutrient in dog foods by the AAFCO so some companies may not add it or attempt to ensure that their dog foods contain it. Thanks nern, right after I posted I actually found the same article myself. You are correct Taurine is not recognized as an essential by the AAFCO. I went ahead and got them a bag of Chicken Soup For The Dogs Soul, I like to mix it up for them and they have been eating the Canidae for quite a while. I was going to try the Organix but it's nearly $30 for a 15 lb bag!!! I'm nutty, but not that nutty! I could put them on raw completely for that. Anyhow they seem to like this new food, so we will see. IP: Logged |

I have always feed my guys additives such as once per day salmon oil. My last pyr lived 14 years. Our Scot was 16. My mother would save the oil from tuna can a pour it over there food. Oh by the way my mother is 94 this year and yes I believe with age comes wisdom. IP: Logged |

Thats great Pyr, I love to listen to elders talk about thier home remedies. Too many people don't listen and hear the value of experience they have to offer. IP: Logged |
