Does this really look like a Catahoula? http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=2229095

Does the description sound like a catahoula? Calm and sweet, calm with other dogs, cats, and kids?

He sort of looks like an ACD to me. But I don't know enough about either breed.

Looks like a Heeler, Shephard cross. Petfinder is an awsome site, but they do tend to get their breeds mixed up. Its difficult to determine the breeds, but as a breeder and rescuer, I can tell that its definately not Catahoula. Could possibly have a little hound in it, but not likely.

They have a program at that shelter where the dogs go live with 3 inmates who share their care, under the supervision of a trainer. They stay for 6-12 weeks and learn obedience, house training, and socialization. It's about a 4 hour drive from here, but I think it's a really good option for us if I can ever convince my husband to allow a second dog.

The dog I posted above looks and sounds like a sweetie. Of course, I have never met him so there's not much to go on.

Well, it is a given that whatever dog we end up with would have to be able to keep up with Nala, at least for a while. One that knew how to be calm when inside would be awesome, though - perhaps it would teach her something!

She does tend to be submissive with other dogs. If I could place an order for a dog, I would go with one who would not let Nala mess with him inside the house and show her how to behave. Outside, he would be playful and fast and run Nala ragged.

It could have some Catahoula in it, but I'm with the ACD idea too. Everyone likes to slap the name Catahoula on any dog that has a merle or leopard patterned coat, it's a "neat" name that generates interest in the dog needing to be adopted. Some of the dogs that are posted on Catahoula rescue don't even resemble a Catahoula, but they have spots...so people think or hope they are.
The description of being sweet and calm doesn't eliminate the possibility of her being Catahoula, I have seen many Catahoula pups described this way, especially when in a shelter. That doesn't mean that once she is comfy and feeling at home somewhere she won't become really active. Witt can be be really calm when we are in a public place or he has his pack on (working). At home he is a wild man sometimes but not all the time, he just needs to have lots of excercise. He can get out of hand, he is Mr. Bossy when it comes to other dogs and he is a one person dog...he doesn't want to listen to anyone else. My friend whom Witt is every familiar with tries to get him to simply sit...he runs for me, sits next to me as if to say.."I only sit for my momma", it pisses my friend off big time. Catahoulas, even purebred ones do come in sort of a wide array of body styles, the differences are often slight but there. Some are bred to be smaller, cattle ranchers who use them for herding prefer this, some are bigger and bulkier, some have more of a houndish looking nose while others have a blockier style head. Mostly what people see is the color, coat pattern, and blue eyes. At our humane society I have seen several "Catahoulas" listed, they weren't even close, but had the coat pattern. It's not even likely to find one out here in the west, the closest active breeder I can find is in California.
Anyhow, I think the dog looks like an ACD mix, they can also be a handful, but then like I told you Jimaya...a truely smart dog will be the challenge...and the most rewarding. I hate to tell you this..but you seem to have an attraction to that kind of dog. *Grins*

Hehe, I do Maisey, I really do. Although some of it is just the look of the dog. I saw a gorgeous dog at PetSmart adoptions once - she looked exactly like an Aussie but apparently her littermate looked exactly like a big black Chow. They were very careful to point out that she was NOT a working dog - she is a couch potato.

I would have considered that dog except that my husband does not want a couch potato.

I still really love Goldens. I am pestering my husband to let me foster them. They are intelligent, beautiful, and are usually softer dogs than what Nala is.

But I don't deny that I love the look of Cal and his description seems too good to be true.

And I also don't deny that I love smart dogs.

I forwarded Cal to my husband and he just laughed. *sigh*

Oh look! When Nala and I go to OK City for the TTouch weekend, I could swing by Hutchinson....it's practically on the way....

I shouldn't have shown him the dog. I should just bring him home and say it is temporary, and then never let him leave.

Jimaya, there is a Catahoula named Bandit on the rescue board that is 4 years old. The owner is in the service and was sent to Iraq, the wife relocated and can't have the dog (?) so they dumped him. Whats amazing to me is that they have had this dog since he was 3 months old and have spent $5,000.00 on complete hip replacements for this dog! I can't imagine doing that, he is set for life now and they dump him. The lady who posted about him says he is the perfect dog, just really sad right now. Maybe there are circumstances beyond what was said, but I couldn't do it...I just couldn't.
If you are interested in an adult dog, give this guy a look.

I don't think his face or body style look like a catahoula. He could be a mix, but whatever he is crossed with is dominant.

Maybe he is a heeler? That sounds more likely.
