I have a minature dachshund and she is so moody and mean towards people she doesn't know. She always snaps and growls at our company. I have to lock her in our room. I always spank her and put her in the kennel as a punishment when she snaps at people but when I spank her she starts growling at me. I don't know what to do? I didn't raise her to be mean and everybody tells me that dachshunds are usually witchy but is their any way to make her be sweet to people? IP: Logged |

Perhaps she has a physical reason behind that moodiness. Maybe arthritis? or some other thing that makes her feel grouchy or touchy. Spanking her is not going to change anything, as you have already seen it doesn't stop her from growling. I would take her to a vet and rule out a physical, medical reason first...then look at behavioral issues. IP: Logged |

I know three people that have mini daschunds, and all have the same issues with their pets- they are moody and snappy to people they don't know. I think it just natural of the breed to be a little more high-strung and moody, that is why it's so important for people to do research on the type of dog they get before getting it, to be prepared for any type of characteristics common to the breed. I don't think the spanking will help at all, as it will probably result in the dog being more afraid of raised hands and people and becoming more defensive. One trick that our trainer told us about and that I've seen mentioned here is to have people offer the dog treats when they come over- this may help her to realize that visitors are a good thing and not any kind of a threat to her.
