Just have a question, we found out Husky Jasmine about 2 yrs ago. We were unable to keep her at the time and she stayed with a friend for about a year. We have had her now for a year and the vet estimates her age at about 5. We have no idea about her past life, except that she was probly abused, and stayed chained to a tree or something. She had no hair on her neck and marks from a chain. Well anyway, she just lays around the house. She is very loving and great dog. Just doesnt exercise. Now when it snows she acts like a puppy. She does have some minor arthritis(sp) in her back legs and is on medicine for that. I just dont know if this is normal. I read about everyones hyper dogs and wonder if she is ok. I dont mind her the way she is, just curious. The vet thinks she is fine, just a laid back dog. We go on walks with her and she enjoys those. I am wondering if she just doesnt know how to play. We give her toys and she just holds them in her mouth or looks at them like what do i do with this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Oh she is also a expert on digging holes, which she lays in. LOL.
Forgot to mention, I have found one way of getting her to run, throwing her treats across the room. LOL. (hope none of u think its mean, she seems to like it)

My 6 yr old St. Bernard is the same way. Just lays around most of the time. Probably sleeps 22 hours out of the day. It's just her thing. She does get hyper (at least hyper for her) at certain times, i.e. when we're going for a car ride, after a bath, going for a walk, etc. Tonight she was running around because the neighbors were shooting fireworks. She hates fireworks. She has also never played with dog toys her entire life. Tried to give them to her when she was a puppy, she wanted nothing to do with them. Her favorite toy was my other dog, they would play fight all the time. Funny thing though, with the new puppy she is jealous and such. I saw her the other day trying to chew on one of his bones. She fooled around with it for a minute or so then dropped it and left.
Long story short, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Some dogs are just lazy. I actually find it to be one of her best attributes after having this hyper, crazy puppy of mine for 7 wks.

I have two Huskies and they love their walks and "complain" when they don't get them. Most Huskies I know love to run and do some sort of exercise so I think it might stem from her abuse. I think what you are currently doing is great. You are getting her out there on the walks and she is enjoying them. Also, you are encouraging her to play. Keep on encouraging her to play with you. It might be since no one played with her, she isn't quite sure what to do. Maybe play chase with her and give her treats when she catches you. Or hide the treat under a toy and give it to her when she finds it. I think you are doing good with what you are doing. She may even come around later on. I also thought of something else - she might even be kicking back and enjoying her good life since her last owner was such a creep. Oh, and by the way, my dogs are also experts when it comes to digging. My backyard looks like golf course!! Part of being a Husky owner, I guess. I love my dogs though. Wouldn't trade them for the world. I tell ya though. Huskies are a handful!

Have you tried socializing her to other dogs?
Perhaps bring her to a dog park, maybe that might add some spark to her laid back ways.
If she ends up liking iit, it would be great exercise for her romping around w/ the others.

She's probably holding the toys in her mouth, wanting you to play w/ her. Or maybe she wants you to show her how to play w/ that particular toy.

Overall, i agree with Karriesue, that to keep up w/ what your already doing.

alot of larger dogs are quite lazy and calm. my dog goes nuts when its park time but other than that she sleeps and doesnt get up for much, and shes only 1 1/2. i always say to my partner 'god id hate to see how slow and lazy she is when shes older!'

Not every dog is hyper. A bunch of my friends have larger breed dogs, and they are lazy as well.

She may just be happy she's loved, and basking in the luxury.

LIke everyone said. keep an eye on her, and lover her unconditionally, she probably had a bad life before you.

I wouldnt worry about it, my lab is the same way, he always has been which is unusual for labs. He sleeps about 20 hours a day, he gets his walks, and he gets spurt of energy to play that last about 15 minutes per day

I am beginning to think that a dog that lies around and sleeps, but likes to play when you invite them to may well be the perfect dog!

My mini poodle lays around alot too, even from the beginning. She does have arthritis. She will pick her time to play, but not always on a daily basis. As for the snow thing, maybe its the call of the huskey, since he is a snow dogs. Like most have said most dogs are sleepers most of the day. Also maybe he is just mature minded and knows that since he is in the house not to goof off.

Count your blessings! I know many will agree with me when I say "why can't my dog be even just a little lazy?" Ha ha. Seriously, though, I'm sure she's fine- just a laid back dog like your vet said. Just make sure she continues to get some exercise, and it sounds like you're doing that, so that she stays fit and healthy.

Our Lab also a rescue who was about 8yrs old when we got her also lazed around a lot and never played in fact she became very stressed when we tried to teach her to play catch.

Then a King shepperd puppy was brought into the picture and after about a year she plays. She'll take his toys out of the toy box and chew on them, run around the yard and play fight, play figting happens inside too and they even play tug of war together.

It's funny to see them play the puppy is only 1yr old and weighs 120lbs so much bigger then his sister who is a Lab.

Sorry havent been on in a few days, thanks for all the responce. I just wanted to hear some others opinions. We dont have any dog parks near by, we also have two small dogs and she watches over them, when they play. On the rare occasion she will chase them around. I think this does stem from her abuse, we are doing all we can with her and just hope she is happy. That is my main concern for her. She is a very loving dog, but that took alot of time too. Anyway thanks for all the advice. Oh I forgot to mention our neighbors got a dog that likes to play in our yard, and I have it fenced, they just chase each other around the fence all day, I would let her in to play but my Husky is very territorial. Maybe when the puppy gets older we can set up some play dates on nuetral ground. Again thanks all and have a great new year!

Some rescues are just happy to be loved and near their owners. She's also at the age where many dogs calm down. If she's enjoying her walks and for her health and exercise that may be all she needs. Not all dogs enjoy toys or playing ball. It took one of my rescues about a year to warm up to the other dogs, each dog is different and has their own pace...so maybe in time.

Perhaps the arthritis or possibly even a secondary pain problem is contributing to her idleness - worth getting checked out by the vet.

The way she is is probably related to her past and may never change but as long as she gets her walks she's content and that may be enough to keep her fit!
