I've been reading this board since the summer & have yet to see anyone talk about their darling akita!! Tyson's a cross but would love to compare notes with someone! We've only had him since August but love, love, love him, he's a total teddy bear & has the most affectionate personality, also finding him very intelligent & social w/ other dogs & people.

What a beauty!!!! I had a Akita, Sheperd mix, He was beautiful! Very sweet, and very smart. I miss him so much! He became ill, and had to be put down, never got over it. I miss having a large dog, I always felt safe with him around. I have two small inside dogs now, Mini Dauchshund and a Shit Tzu. I love them too. I thought of getting another large breed, but didn't have the heart for it. I couldn't replace Chuck (that was his name) Perhaps some day..... Susan

My neighbor has an Akita, he's seriously H U G E ! ! I think Akitas are awesome. I've seen a couple outstanding ones at dog parks. When my American Bulldog was a puppy, he used to always get picked on by the "playground bullies" (in dog parks). Usually they would be Boxers, Huskies, & Akitas. Pitbulls, Rotts, Staffs, AB's, and the like were his favorite play-pals. They somehow always clicked w/ each others playing style. But Boxers, Huskies, & Akitas for some reason would always have a power trip on my AB. I was told by some Akita owners that Akitas can be a little aggressive towards littler dogs/pups. My neighbors Akita is pretty neutral towards other dogs in general (small or big). Maybe he just knows he's the big-boy on the block... Anyhow, i'm not speaking for "all" Akitas, Boxers, & Huskies. I'm just saying that's the way i noticed it went down, as my pup was growing up.
I'd love to experiance life w/ an Akita, if i ever live in a cold climate.

She's beautiful....

My neighbor also has an akita! He doesn't seem to mind other dogs either, since they also have a scottish terrier and a blue heeler/border collie mix. He is a beautiful and CALM dog!

goodboysbaddogs, youre right there about the power trip thing. my dog will only play with smaller dogs because she can dominate them really easily. they love to be top dog. the only problem we have with her and other dogs is if other dogs give off bad vibes, eg not wagging tail, growling, raising hair. if a dog isnt happy to see her she senses something is wrong and is on alert. i know how you feel about the feeling safer thing susan. kuma is so suspiscious of everything and everyone so no one would want to mess with us.

kyles... what a gorgeous dog...how does she do in the heat? To think we were worried about bringing Tyson to the middle of Canada from the north!

A funny thing I've noticed....Tyson licks himself like a cat! His paws are always sparkling white. Not sure how normal that is but it's easy on our floors anyway!

When we first got him he was quite aggressive...maybe a holdover from the pound..but now he's completely different...likes to say 'hi' then usually does his own thing. My parent's collie cross regularly puts Tyson in his place when we're over visiting. He's had smaller dogs attack him and then of course when he defends himself the owner thinks it's our fault! It's kind of funny...I've seen people throw themselves in front of their dogs when he goes over to say hi (while I'm shouting 'He's friendly!!') ... it's too bad there's that snap judgement that happens but I guess I can understand it.

I'd read that akitas shouldn't be off the leash as they're so curious...he's usually pretty good in terms of listening although has no traffic sense whatsoever.

Unfortunately akitas seem to have a bad rap mid-Canada as there were a couple of attacks on small children this past summer.

Even so there are a heck of alot of people who can't resist this grin.

he is beautiful, he kind looks like a wolf! As for licking wylie licks her paws constantly too and grooms herself, we joke maybe she was a cat in a previous life since I have never seen a dog do this

Hi Kyles, I can't get over how much your precious Kuma reminds me of my late (but never forgotten) Chuck. Just looking at that magnificent animal makes me miss him sooooo much!

At first, I didn't know if Chuck would protect me or not, he was so gental. But one day a man came to the house to drop off a order for his wife. Chuck was inside, and when the man went to put my order on the kitchen table (he had to reach in front of me to do this) Chuck ran and got in between us, began a low growl and paced in front of me. I had to put him outside, I was afraid he would bite the man. But I tell you! I was so proud of him! from that day forward, I was never afraid of anything.....What a joy our pets are! just had to share that little story...Have a great day!!!! Susan

OK, my neighbor has one named Kuma too! Doesn't look like yours though! Is white with brown spots. He is really pretty!

kuma does pretty well in the heat actually. in summer it can reach 40 to 42 degrees celcius. when it gets like that we just keep her inside or go to the beach and she seems to do just fine. some people walk away from her if she goes over to them and once they realise shes harmless they say 'oh thats an akita isnt it? i thought they were suppose to be aggressive'. your dog is very sweet lovemydog. akitas have such beautiful eyes. kuma is a VERY popular name for akitas. we didnt know this until after we got kuma. we went to a dog show and half the dogs were called kuma! theres also an akita friend at the beach called kuma too.
