I've got a 8-month-old pup. Two weeks ago, after I noticed pus around her vagina, the doctor said she had vaginitis and gave me otomax to apply topically. I took her back this weekend, because there is still pus - whitish yellowish mucish strands coming out or at the tip. The doctor thought it may have become a urinary tract or bladder infection. I know have her on oral antibiotics and the cream. Also a cone so she can't lick herself. I saw in a medical book yesterday that this is not common in young, healthy pups. She was spayed at around 5 1/2 months. At puppy class people remarked she wasn't herself. She was lying on the ground - she's usually one of the spunkiest pups around. With her cone on, she's very inactive and lies around, basically all she can do. But when I take her out she runs and plays like usual. Could this be something serious? I'm a nervous wreck. Can it be a symptom of a bigger problem? And have other people had this with their young female pups? IP: Logged |

I would take her to another vet and get a second oppinion. Perhaps the vet who diagnosed isn't correct, or didn't look into the case far enough. Give her plenty of love, that should help her cheer up a bit. Being a woman myself, I can only imagine what she feels like, though I've never had anything serious except for a bladder infection and that was awful! Poor girl, hope she gets better! IP: Logged |

I think the inactivity with the cone on is just caused by her not being happy about wearing the cone. It's the same sort of idea as when my pup behaves when she has the Gentle Leader on. I agree with Samsintentions, though, and would take her to a different vet for a second opinion.
