Hi, I was wondering what to do about Casey. She will not get out of the crib, if freeby is any where in the house. (Casey is the new momma dog) (Freeby is our other dog) I have to show her that I have Freeby in my arms, taking him outside, otherwise she won't leave those pups for nothing. She will, if it's just my husband and myself, but not with Freeby. I worry that she is not getting enough free time from the puppies, is this normal? And she will attack Freeby, if he's anywhere near the crib. How do I show her that he wants nothing to do with here pups? He has not acted at all like he would even go near them. Thanks...Susan IP: Logged |

doesn't sound like you know enough about dogs to be breeding them. IP: Logged |

Glad to hear the new Mommy & babies are doing well. Casey is just doing her job as a responsible mother and making sure her babies are safe. Even if you know Freeby wouldn't harm the babies she doesn't. I would put Mom & babies in a seperate room for a few days and put up a baby gate to block the doorway. That way she will feel free to get out of the "crib" and move about without worrying about the new babies. After Casey feels more comfortable with Motherhood I would take the gate down. Just a thought--good luck! justme~ IP: Logged |

JMR, Susan's dog accidently got pregnant and we've been with her the whole way. She has gotten vet advice and care. We are here to support her. [This message has been edited by RottyMommy (edited 11-17-2003).] IP: Logged |

It sounds like she is the perfect mother!!! I'll say congratulations to her for being so attentive, although she should be going to the "toilet" frequently for the first few days after whelping as there could still be fluid that needs to be expelled. Does she mind if you pick them up? if she dosen't you should keep them with you for half an hour or so , so she can go outside without worrying about them. or if that won't work then maybe you can take her out and play with her for a little while and she should relax and "go" while you are out there with her. If she is totally protective and won't leave them then maybe you could lay some newspaper down away from her and the pups but in the same room so she can go when no-one is around. She should be less protective in the second or third week when they start to wobbly-walk and their eyes open up. I wouldn't be too worried at the moment, just let her do what she wants to, but make sure she eats frequently. It is also a good idea to keep your other dog away from her and the pups until she feels more comfortable away from them. I hope you are having fun being "grandma" and give Casey and her pups cuddles for me. IP: Logged |

Separating the two dogs does sound like a good idea to me. That way Mommy dog can relax without worry.

Hi Susan so glad mum and babies are doing so well. This is perfectly normal behaviour for a bitch with pups she see's freeby as a threat to her babies and she will stop at nothing to protect them. I have to agree seperating them would be a good idea. Casey should now be leaving her pups every so often to go relieve herself and to feed providing the puppies are warm and there is no draughts they can be without mum for about 2hours so this will give you time to change the bedding and spend sometime playing with casey. My bitches attacked anyone and anything that went near there puppies yet she never went for me or my partner. even when they were fully weaned they were still very much protective. But you are showing ur concern by seeking advice most people wont bother but we have been here for you through it and we will still be here to help you get through any other problems you may come across.. But apart from seperating the dogs there isnt much you can do as even if you tried showing her that freeby wont hurt her babies she will still snap at him.. good luck with the new family... JMR susan is a responsible lady she needed advice and she seeked this from a vet and came here for more advice the pregnancy was an accident. there is no such thing as a good breeder as every new birth is totally different IP: Logged |

I thank you all sooooo much!!!! not only for the great advise that I have received, but for sticking by me "and up for me" Thanks again! Things are so much better now, I do keep them seperated most of the time, except once in a while when I am playing with the both of them. At those times Casey is just fine with Freebie, it's just as you all "well most" say that she is being protective. I'm lucky that I live at the coast where the weather is good most all the time, that way Freebie can stay outside alot, and Casey has free run of the place. As for going to the bathroom, I don't worry about that, she lets me know. She has calmed down quite a bit since i wrote you about advise for this, she will allow Freebie in the same room, as long as he doesn't go near the crib. Unfortunantly the only place I had to put the crib, is in the living room, because my husband sleeps during the day. So the back of the house has to stay quiet. But it's all working out just fine. Mommy and babies are doing great! they are so precious, it will be hard to let go of any of them when the time comes. So good to hear from all of you! Jmr, I'm not offended , everyone has a right to an opinion. I'm just very thankful, that I have been blessed with such good people on this site. Sincerely, Susan IP: Logged |
