Well I have a great dane puppy of roughly 4 and a half months of age. He weighs about 55 pounds. About 5 minutes ago I was trying to take a toy from him and he freaked and swallowed it. It was roughly 4 inches long and one inch in diameter....the round plush leg of some sort of soft toy. Just the leg but it was a good sized chunk. He didnt appear to choke on it or anything and is just taking a nap now. How worried should I be? In a dog his size will it probably just pass? Ive heard horror stories about those rope toys but this was just a soft plush piece with only a small amount of stuffing left inside. Any comments greatly appreciated as Im a little bit nervous at the moment!

hi, not sure about the size thing but I do know that large items swallowed can lead to major intestine problems. I would take him to a vet to be x-rayed, make sure its not stuck anywhere unless it comes out on its own soon. Good luck and keep us posted

I'm usually a freaked mom when it comes to my dogs...if you would feel better taking him to the vet do it. I think I would wait a bit, monitor his eating, drinking and output. Maybe even journal it. Inspect each poop to see if he has passed it. If he stops eating, becomes lethargic or isn't having bowel movements I would get him in pronto. My dog ate a toothpick not too long ago and I had heart failure. The vet said to just watch him. He did tell me he is usually more worried about large items that may cause bockages, so keep an eye open. Let us know how it all turns out.

Definately keep an eye on him. If he doesn't pass it with in 48 hrs, or shows any signs of discomfort, take him to the vet asap!
Toys can be dangerous, thats why I only use the tough toys and the kongs. My dogs are excellent chewers and destroyers, so we have to be extra careful.

Like everyone said, keep an eye out, but honestly I think he should be fine. Our dog Cameron did her fair share of swallowing things as a puppy. We tried to keep everyone out of reach, but she still found a way to swallow a button or coin or chew one of the eyes out of a stuffed animal (not one of her toys, one that she found in a bedroom). She never had any issues, and it always passed through fine. You would be surprised what dogs can swallow! Not that I'm condoning letting dogs swallow things they shouldn't, but if they sneak something and it does happen, don't sweat too much- it really should be fine. If he is prone to swallowing plush toys, though, I would maybe try to stick with tougher rubber toys in the future.

I agree with the idea to watch him carefully. The toy should pass in twenty-four hours or less. Everytime I meet someone with a Great Dane pup I always offer two pieces of advice that I have learned about this breed. First is that for all it's other benefits, neutering a Great Dane will extend his life span considerably. You should also become familiar with the symptoms of Bloat, especially as you dog ages. Great Danes are very susceptible to experiencing this condition which can be fatal if not treated promptly. I posted this web site years ago to inform people about this condition. Please take a minute of two to look it ovet at: http://www.flash.net/~jdebess/index.htm
Let us know how things turn out for your pup. We can all learn from your experience.

This is probably too late but for anyone having the same problem in the future: Max swallowed a sock a few months back. He would not drop it when told and any attempt to get it from him resulted in him running around like a maniac. I simply called to vet to ask what to do. They told me to feed him a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (2tbs) to induce vomitting. It work well, however I definitely wouldn't do this without calling your vet first. I gave them Max's age and weight and they were able to give me the proper amount to feed him so as on to poison him to death.

I decided to go the monitor route instead of rushing to our emergency vet (who misdiagnosed my hypoglycemic chihuahua about 3 months ago and charged me 100 bucks to tell me "Well I dont know whats wrong")
So far...all is normal. Having bowel movements..eating..drinking....all is well at the moment. This is my first dane so when he ripped the leg off one of my poodles toys...I went to take it from him as it looked like he had the whole thing in his mouth...then 2 seconds later he had spit it out on the ground....so i paused....which is when he snaked it and swallowed it in half a second. Ive taken away the other leg so hopefully all the rest of the toys are dane safe. I'll keep you all posted!!! Thank you for the messages =)

Maybe if you gave him a spoonful or two of canola oil it would help....I haven't ever done this, but maybe call your vet and ask what he thinks.

Yea! Glad he got rid of it! My dog's sister once ripped open a stuffed animal, and they normally take it away once she does so that she doesn't eat the stuffing, but they didn't notice, and so she ate the stuffing. They noticed later, and the next morning, they let her out to go the bathroom and were doing something on the other side of the yard, and she came running and yelping, and she had about 2 ft. of stuffing sticking out of her rear end!

I'm sorry, I know how scary and serious this could have been, but that had me rolling. "Still waiting for the anckle" lol

Hope all goes well.

Ladies and gentlement...we have an ankle! I was reallly worried for a little while there. I just quit my job at a vet so vet services were about to go from completely free to incredibly expensive =D This has definately opened up my eyes with just how careful I need to be with toys.
