my neighbor threw away there puppy...and i found it outside..and took it..and recently she has been bleeding when she poops..i talked to lady she said she has all her shots and stuff... she was chewing on bones from steak and i think she ate half of it could that be the problem?? i cant afford a vet at moment im inbetween jobs (disabled) and my wife is only makeing enough to get us by. what can i do..should i take away bones? or could something else be wrong? it happens in small globs before she poops sometimes she doesnt even poop..what could be wrong? thanx [This message has been edited by Ninja BoB (edited 11-04-2003).] IP: Logged |

Hi, Ninja Bob, That is most definitely NOT normal. My advice is to first look for a vet that will accept payments. If that fails, maybe it's best to take the puppy to a shelter where it can receive veterinary care and be placed with another home. It sounds like the puppy just showed up on your doorstep because it was abandoned and I applaud you for taking it in, but I also urge you to do what's necessary for the pup to be healthy. I don't mean for this to be a lecture, just a pep talk! Sounds like you care enough about the puppy to ask here, so I'm sure you'll do the responsible thing. IP: Logged |

No, the blood is not normal. I agree with Alison. There are vets out there that accept payments. The steak bones could be a definate cause of the blood and there could have been some damage to the pup's insides. Also, if the pup was abandoned, there could have been some abuse so the pup needs a checkup anyways. Don't wait. Blood in the stool could be serious and the pup's health could be in danger. Part of being a pet owner is to take care of your pet's health and your pup needs you to do this. [This message has been edited by Karriesue (edited 11-04-2003).] IP: Logged |

I agree with the above Bob, kudos to you for taking the pup in and doing your best. I never give my dogs cooked bones of any kind, always raw or not at all. Thats my personal rule of thumb. Cooked bones can splinter and cause all kinds of trouble. If you really want to keep the dog, call around to some vets, explain the situation and find one that will take payments. Someone on this forum has mentioned some kind of credit card for pet care before...anyone remember? IP: Logged |

how sad. i didnt know that the bones would hurt her. i was just trying to give to her as treats for going to the bathroom. she is such a sweet dog and i called some places today one in which they dont kill or put to sleep..pure foster\adoption just waiting on the call bck. it also said on page they pay for all MEDICAL for the puppies i just hope they get her intime i think its getting worse. i woke up to find a small pool of blood about the size of what an egg would be if u broke it on carpet. she keeps whining and i just rub her tummy i feel so stupid and ashamed i thought i was doing the right thing and i could have destroyed my sweet gypsys life =( all i can do now is pray that they callback soon .. thanx for the help guys James IP: Logged |

Well James, you certainly saved that precious life to begin with. If it weren't for you she probably would have died of hunger or certainly would be suffering in the streets somewhere by herself. You are doing what is right for her now if you bring her into a shelter. Odds are, I would think that it wasn't the bones that harmed her, she probably wasn't well cared for at her old home and probably acquired what is wrong with her from there. But I would either take her to a shelter or to a vet ASAP. Please let us know what happens to her. IP: Logged |

I agree with Newlabownr. You don't know for sure that it was the bones or not so don't blame yourself. Plus you had no idea. Try to get her to a vet ASAP. Please let keep us posted. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Hi, Unfortunately they are all right. You have to take the pup to the vet as soon as possible, hopefully there is a vet in your area that will work out with you when it comes to paying the bills. I live in a small town and surrounded by vets that are good and a few will work out something with you about payment deals or even trade services. If it is not anything that the pup has eaten irritating it's internal organs, it could be some kind of parasite that can be fatal. Consider coccidia, it is a parasite that if left alone can bring serious problems, especially for smaller type pups. Some symptoms of this is stool accompanied with blood and/or jelly like substance if not diarrhea. Now anyone in here with small dogs know that we need to keep an eye on our puppies eating habits, when they are less than 12 weeks old, for if they don't get enough nutrition in them they can be hypoglycemic, and if coccidia is present, this can definitely be a lethal combination if not treated right away. There is really no medicine that can kill coccidia, in order for our pups to get rid of it, their immune system needs to be in great shape, meaning they have to eat right...be healthy... and a daily dosage of albon that the vet can give you. So, please take her to the vet, I am glad that you took her in before anything worse happened. Keep us posted! IP: Logged |

OHH Bob...I didn't mean that you giving her bones was the cause...not at all. You asked about it and I was just letting you know it's not a good idea. Since you just rescued her there is no way for you to know what the problem is. If she is bleeding that much she really needs to get into an emergency clinic. Perhaps if you took her to one and stated she was a stray they would treat her and the rest could be worked out after. I hope there is a good outcome for this little one. IP: Logged |

The dog needs to see a vet ASAP! The bleeding could be from a scratched rectal or bowel area from the bones OR something equally or more serious. Do you know how old she is? Are you certain as to where the bleeding is coming from? It could be that she is in HEAT..... you might want to take a closer look and see if the blood is coming from her vulva area. hope she feels better soon! I am glad to hear the good news. I think we all were worried there for a while. I do have one suggestion. Since you are having problems with finances, you should set up a seperate savings account just for your dog's medical expenses. One never knows when an emergency can pop up and you don't want to be in another situation where you can't afford a vet. Also, check out vets now. Find one that can take payments if needed and that you feel comfortable with. There are some low-cost vets out there who do good work, you just have to find it. Again, I am happy that your puppy is better. Good luck with her! IP: Logged |
