Very early, the morning of September 30th, my two dogs, Bosco and Mildred, escaped from the back yard through an open gate. A short time later, both dogs crossed Andrews, a major street. But moments later, a "hit and run" driver, went through a red light, hit and killed Bosco, my nine year old chocolate Labrador and kept on going. Mildred, a ten year old Brittany Spaniel, was with him and kept on running further down the street. I found all this out from a hysterical woman who saw the whole thing. She called me from her cell phone after finding my phone number on Bosco's tags. I drove around for hours trying to find Mildred without any luck. I sent email, with pictures of Mildred attached, to various local animal control shelters in the area. But on Friday morning, finally some good news. The local Humane Society called and said they had Mildred!!! They said the photos I emailed them had really helped, even though her collar and tags were still in place. Other than some painful blistering footpads, she got a clean bill of health from the Humane Society vet as well as my own. She's still on painkillers and not quite herself yet. As for me, this ordeal has taken a heavy toll and has totally wiped me out. This has been the worst week of my entire life. I had Bosco for over nine years and really missed this wonderful companion. As soon as Mildred and I are doing better, I'll be adopting a new companion from a local shelter. As soon as I picked up Mildred, I took her to my vet to be checked out. I immediately had a microchip implanted in her and will be getting her tattooed as well. Both the tattoo and the microchip are very important. I urge everyone to get this done to all your dogs ASAP. Please don't assume that they'll never get loose!! [This message has been edited by sandman (edited 10-05-2003).] IP: Logged |

I'm so sorry for your loss, I have a 4.5 pound pekeapoo who has been sqeezing herself through the spaces in my picket fence. I'm going to buy some chicken wire tomorrow so she can't squeeze out. I constantly check when she is in my back yard anyway I have two little dogs and I know that there are dognappers out there as well. Thank goodness my Yorkie is a loud month. He starts barking any time any one comes near but your story really made me realize I need to fix that fence asap. IP: Logged |

Thanks for all of your kind words!! Tomorrow, I'm going to one of the area dog pounds to hopefully adopt a new friend. Until now, I've been too emotionally drained to even consider it. But now the time feels right. I figure by rescuing a dog, Bosco didn't die in vain. It's as if he died before his time in order to save another dog from being put down. I'll update everyone about the new dog as soon as I have a chance. Thanks again to everyone who replied!! Neal IP: Logged |

Neal-- I know of someone who has a red, rednose in Florida and is trying to find her a home. I think she is just three months old. (I THINK!!) I can get her email address, she is willing to deliver in the state of Florida or travel as far as Georgia or labama to meet someone to take the dog. If you are interested, email me at hafkel@hotmail.com and I will get her address and info for you. The dog will jsut end up in a shelter otherwise. Angie IP: Logged |
