My two dogs have taken a likeing to digging holes. They have toys. They have bones to chew on, but instead they want to dig holes. We have so many holes in the back yard, if you want a game of golf, just come to my house.... My hubby and I have tried everything. We have tried putting balloons in the holes and filling them with sand. Pepper on the holes don't work. Giving them new toys. We have tried disciplining them but that doesn't work. The holes are that deep, I'm surpised they don't get lost then they fall in one. Any help would be appreciated! Jody IP: Logged |

I have two Huskies and I went through the same thing. Dogs dig for different reasons...boredom, lack of exercise, lack of attention, and maybe just because it is in their blood depending on the breed of your dogs. One of the best ways to cure digging is to deposit dog poo in the holes and lightly cover it and also put it around the holes where they dig the most. It really works. I got this advice from several people and didn't believe it. Need anymore help let me know. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Ok we filled the holes with a little of their own dog poop and they haven't gone near it. It's only been two days since we have done it, so hopefully this works. If not I'll be berry them in their own holes..... Jody IP: Logged |

I am sorry to hear they have dug more holes. It is so hard to get them to quit digging. I am still dealing with it. Have you tried exercising them? For instance taking them for long walks or running them? I've noticed that the more exercise I give my Huskies, the less they get into things. How about chew bones? Like I said, I am still having problems, it has been so hot during the summer in Nevada (my husband is stationed here in the military!) that it has been unbearable to go outside to play with them and give them their exercise. In turn, they have been tearing up bushes and digging holes. I know how you are feeling! IP: Logged |

They both get walked for an hour every morning from 6am-7am, this includes weekends. They have thousands of toys out the back to chew on. As for Bones they lick them for 10 minutes then go bury it in the back yard somewhere and thus digging another hole...... I'll just have to keep burying their dog poo in it as this seems to work.....Even if the whole back yard is buried with dog poo, then surely they wont dig it up anymore....Hence the backyard will look aboslutely green with my new fertilization....... I don't know how big your yard is , but my husband ended up burying fencing. We tried all sorts of things but Rik was just born to dig.Another trick that worked was cheyenne pepper in the holes, but as soon as we stopped he went right back to digging. IP: Logged |

I am thinking about tearing out what grass we have left and filling the whole backyard with river rock....

Sounds like a good idea to me. I've tried Pepper and that didn't work. My dog has since hurt her leg since digging another hole as she feel down. She's limping around, the vet said that there doesn't seem to be any real damage. She should heel in a few days. BUT she wont learn, cause she has dug more holes. Wouldn't mind cemencing the HOLE back yard it self. Would be good. LOL Jody IP: Logged |

OMG!! I have filled them holes with everything.. at least you all haven't got a tunnel going underneath of your hot topped walk way.. There is a hole two feet deep off to the side about three feet from their tunnel... Of course, I had drunken family members have a three people pile up in that one.. lol. Tried the puppy poo and sand over it thing.. been raining and they haven't been out much so hopefully it works.. Angie IP: Logged |

Maybe you could give them an appropriate place for their digging. Build a sandbox, fill it with sand, dirt or whatever and bury a few goodies in it, and teach them that is where they can dig. With true hole digging lovers, the best thing to do is give them an appropriate place to go at it, and let themselves dig to China there if they so desire. You will have to do some training to reinforce and teach them where their specail digging area is, and then teach them not to dig elsewhere- and you can do that by teaching a "NO DIG" command. When they are in a spot that is not allowed for digging, tell them NO DIG and take them to where they can dig, and encourage the digging with treats and bones in that spot only. You can say "DIG" where you want them to dig. They can learn the difference, I believe. Continuous positive reinforcement in that spot will hopefully teach them to act out this behavior there. I have heard this works well- never tried it myself, though as I have never had a digger like you are describing. I am sure it is frustrating. Sometimes it is better to embrace certain things and work with them in an acceptable manner when they are so driven with that desire. If they cannot dig, they are going to do something else to release that behavior and then you have a new problem. I would also think that if you filled all those holes with dog poo your yard would eventually start to stink and it can breed flies, germs etc. IP: Logged |

This sounds like a good idea. I'll have to try it. With the weekend looking pretty good this weekend, I'll be out fencing off a little area off the yard and start to teach them this. I don't know how it will go, because I'm not there during the day to see what they are up to, but I'll try anything to stop them from digging holes. Jody IP: Logged |

I don't think you have mentioned the kind of dogs you have or their ages- what do you have and how old are they? Is it possible to crate them during the day or are you gone too long? Are they too big? It will be difficult to train them not to dig in your yard if they have complete freedom out there when you are not home. If that is the case, maybe you need to think about a large dog kennel outdoors? Something on a cement pad or pavers that is big enough to accomodate two dogs. Your dogs sound like they are bored- if they are home all day in a yard with no supervision- it is no wonder they have become diggers. I think your situation requires some behavior modification, and I would really think about all the options (outdoor kennel, crating and having a pet sitter stop by to walk them etc.) In order for any kind of training to be successful you are going to have to monitor them when they are in the backyard. Good luck- IP: Logged |

AGH!! I came home to a new home. My boyfriend has been letting them in and out and they are really enjoying hole digging.. the burying dog poo thing isn't working.. Tried it.. never worked.. They dug around it. I cannot set up a sand box where I live.. I am thinking about having them cement the whole area.. lol. I only wish! My dogs are Pitbull's and they are four months old. I know the age has a major factor in this.. they get more excercise than they can handle.. have to take naps to recharge so to say. All of my Pitbull's have dug holes like they were preparing to bury me in them or something someday.. CRAZY MUTTS!!! They are like Peewee Herman on Speed.. (Not a good sight.. lol, but great example for extremely hyper!!) Any suggestions anyone.. they know they aren't suppose to but when I turn my back they sniff their way over and start digging. LOL Angie. I have a 3 year old Lab x Kelpie (Jasper) and she is very hypo and gets very bored easy. I also have a Staffy x t (Miah) who is only 1 1/2 that is also very hypo and seems to copy Jasper. So everything that Jasper does Miah does to. My dogs would be in a crate for 8 hours a day if I did crate them and that would be to long for them. They get walked every morning and they have bones to chew on, but still they want to dig holes and they do get very bored easy. I will try everything possible to stop them from digging. I have a large are that is fenced off and will be putting them there when we get all the fencing re done again so they'll be going in there until that is done. IP: Logged |

I have heard about the technique that jeminn suggested. My yard isn't fenced here yet, but when it is I plan to try that. I was going to take some boards and make them a square where they can dig. Nothing could get them to stop at our old place. As a side note, I have heard that sometimes dogs dig because their feet itch and they are trying to get relief. It is some sort of allergy or infection, I can't quite remember. I think this might be suspected if you have an adult dog who all of a sudden starts digging. My dogs were born diggers. IP: Logged |

What I want to know is where does all the dirt go when dogs dig holes? I try to get the dirt back in to fill up the holes again - but there's never enough dirt to fill up the hole completely. Do they eat it??? IP: Logged |

People have suggested sand box plus air horn if dog starts to dig outside of sand box. IP: Logged |

People have suggested: Don't deny your dog the enjoyment of digging. Make a sand box for him, then use an air horn if he starts to dig outside of box. IP: Logged |
