I should have never opened my big mouth on these boards a couple months ago. I said my dog was the sweetest thing in the world and all was peaches and cream! Well, that went out the window. Since we adopted an older dog (he was only 10 months, but had previous owners drop him off at the shelter), he came with some baggage. I won't get into the plethora of problems since that would take forever. We've done the training, research, work with the dog... and nothing was helping. Short of taking the dog back (and I'm sure all of you can understand why we couldn't do that) we decided as a last straw to hire a behaviorist. I just wanted to say that the service we chose was surprisingly excellent! Our dog is far from better, but now we're equipped with knowledge and are activly working to make the dog's problems go away. Everyone thought we were crazy for doing this, but we felt we had no other choice. I just wanted to share this with you guys since there was a question here awhile ago about behaviorists. The fee we paid covered so much (for very little) and it's refreshing to see that the woman is going out of her way to meet up with us again to work on the problems. She actually seems to have the dog as her concern and the money is just a happy side-effect. IP: Logged |

I just want to mention that a service to look into is barkbusters.com. They are a franchise or something, so there are local trainers in different areas of the country. I called the one here, and I don't know if the fees are the same everywhere (probably not), but her quote was $375 for your "dream dog" - basically you give her a wish list and she comes to your house and teaches you and the dog in your home (where the problems occur). She comes as many times as needed, and the training is guaranteed for the life of the dog - meaning, for example, if in 5 years a problem comes back, she will come back and help again with no extra charge. She also offers one-time consultations for something like $125, but if I were to pay that much I would rather pay the big fee and get continuing service. I am contemplating this service, but not until Nala is older and we see how she does with a little more maturity and training.

We got two in-home sessions and three months of follow-up, plus countless printouts and a 'report' for $160. I think it was a good price (especially because she wants to meet us again to work on the dog out in a park). The service you mentioned sounds interesting. I knew nothing about services like that. I could easily come up with a wish list for the dog and it'd be great if that came true! IP: Logged |
