hi... i have a chihuahua/whippet and she constantly bites at her feet (right at the nails) and often bites the nails themselves. one of the nails actually looks thinner than the others. is this normal? is there anything i can do to make her stop? it's like her nails are splitting. maybe i can file them where they are rough? pls help. she is just a year old. thanks

Maybe take her to a groomer and ask them to look at her feet. She may have something stuck between her pads thats bothering her, her nails may be too long, or it could be a type of nervous habit. I'm not sure about allergies as you didn't mention any other symptoms. My Poodle will someyimes chew at one of his feet, after checking to make sure there isn't a reason for him to do it, I will put bitter apple on his feet to discourage him from chewing at them.

Maisey is very right. Make sure your dogs nails are clipped back so they don't touch the floor when walking. It takes some time to get them to that point, try not to clip the quick. All of Maiseys points are good. Look inbetween the toes and see if there is anything stuck in there or even under the skin. Things can get lodged under the skin and cause problems. Allergies are very likeley too. Take your dog to the vet and see what he says to be safe. Also of course file her nails one a week if she lets you. That way her feet will be easy to work with. Just a little at a time.
