Here is the problem...we are very worried. Our 7 wk old lab puppy was not really eating this past week. We took him to our vet saturday & he lost 1/2 pound. Well our vet gave him a new richer food which he devoured in a second. We took him home & he threw it up & had diarrhia. Anyway he has continued to have vomiting & diarriah & not a great appetite. My wife made him rice..mixed with his food this morning. We'll see what happens. The vet said he could have a bowel obsrtuction or gastronitis. Plus he was taken from his mom too early..6wks. which pisses us off cause the breeder wanted the pups sold at 6 weeks. Do you guys have any ideas? We will take him to the vet today again if he doesn't hold his food. He is acting chipper tho. Thanks...we are WORRIED! IP: Logged |

I feel 8 weeks is better, but 6 weeks should not harm your pup. I believe it is more of a behavior issue than a health issue. I would take him to the vet again. If your vet doesn't give you some answers, you might want to try a different vet for a second opinion. Has he had his first set of shots? You want to rule out parvo. He should also be wormed as that is a common ailment in puppies that could cause the symptoms you are observing. Definitely get him in to a vet. Puppies can dehydrate very quickly.

Thanks for your reply. I have a lot of confidence in our vet tho. This is our 2nd dog. We also have an 8 yr old bichon. He checked our puppies stool sample..no parasites & he didn't want to give him his shots until 8 wks..so he doesn't have his shots as of yet. What makes you think it could be a behavior issue? That's interesting. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

From the symptoms you described I guess your Vet ruled out the pup eating something it shouldn't. Labs are notorius for eating anything and everything. Is you pup drinking water OK? Dehydration can become another problem on top of the ailment. Keep us posted. IP: Logged |

I meant that a pup leaving its mom at 6 weeks is more likely to give rise to behavior problems rather than health problems. Some people say 6 weeks is ideal, because otherwise they bond "too much" with other dogs instead of humans. Others say from 6-8 weeks they are still learning important social skills that are better taught by other dogs. In lieu of that, a person must teach them those skills. I suppose if a pup is still nursing between 6-8 weeks, they would still be deriving some health benefits to being with mom. I don't know if they do this, though, as I have never had a mother doggie! It's good you trust your vet. I'm glad to hear he checked for parasites. Some of your pup's distress could be caused by the stress of going to a new home. Were you feeding him the same food he was eating at the breeder's house (before your vet switched him)? If not, he could have been reacting to the new food. Is he drinking enough water? Have you called the breeder to see if any of the other pups are experiencing problems? As dukesdad said, it could be he ate something, which could cause an obstruction as your vet said. I have heard people on this board recommend rice and boiled chicken, or baby food meat to try to get a dog to eat. Also, there is pedialyte to help keep him hydrated. I would definitely call the vet and see what he says. Another check-up may be in order. If he is still chipper, that's probably a good sign. If he gets lethargic, I would get him in right away. Good luck, and keep us posted!

I would definately get him to the vet and make sure the pup doesn't have Parvo! The symtoms of parvo are Bloody diarrea, vomiting, fever, laying around alot, not eating or drinking. keep us updated! IP: Logged |

How is your puppy doing. We had a lot of problems with our dog we adopted from the pound. We had her tested for allergies and it was found she had none. Despite that we put her on Natures Choice allergy formula ( duck and potato) and all of her stomach problems dissapeared. She is a much happier dog and we are much happier parents IP: Logged |

Thank you for all your concern & comments. "Buster is doing great"! He is eating...mostly Science Diet Puppy Chicken with cooked long grain white rice my wife cooks up & some Science Diet Puppy Chow thrown in. We are taking him to the vet satuday to see how much he weighs & gets his shots...he's turning 8 wks tuesday. PS...this morning my wife came in screaming..."he had a totally formed stool"!
