My little 2 year old shih tzu has all of a sudden developed nickle size sores on her neck. Just as one clears up I find another. She has been on antibiotics for over a week and I just discovered another one. The sores have waxy scabs and seem to heal faster if the scab is removed and peroxide applied. The do itch and the scratching has decreased considerably with the antibiotic. Are these the notorius hot spots I hear about? The vet says she thinks it is an allergy and will put her on prednisone if the antibiotic doesn't work. ????????? Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions? IP: Logged |

it is good you went to a vet these could be the so called hot spots. since they seem to be just around the neck did you recently get the dog a new coller or a flea drop type treatment this may be a reaction to these. good luck finding the cause does she borrow under beds or couches to have a good scratch in this drier weather somewhere you may not catch her at it if you put a little bell on her collar everytime she goes for a good scratch you'll hear her and could maybe stop some of the problem. Thanks Lassie The bell is a great idea! No is the answer to all of the questions. We did put her on a topical steroid and another round of antibiotics. The vet also discovered seborea (I know that isn't how it is spelled!) and gave me a prescription shampoo. She scratched a lot less after just one bath. Dr Dawn says it is an infection under the skin caused by the (mispelled word). No more sores to date and the old ones have responded well to the cream. Now the german shepherd has a spot!!!! I really think it is a bite from the shih tzu though. Keep your fingers crossed for me and thanks for the input. The bell is in place and she's smart enough to know she has to stop scratching whe SHE hears the bell - to cute huh? Lou IP: Logged |
