I have a 14 month old papillon male (Max) who is the only dog that we have (no kids) he is very good w/us never bites likes to play loves to be petted very good dog except when he is around other dogs. I am getting a new dog next week 3 months old (same kind) same owners, very tiny 1 1/2 lbs Max is 10. My girlfriend got a new puppy (rat terrier) she brought him over and Max went nuts growling, I never seen him like that he was horrible I am so scared I do not know how to introduce them the right way so they get along. I realize that these things take time but I am scared. The next day I brought Max over my friends house w/the puppy and they got along a little better but still not that well but that was not at Max's house. Please I need advice quick new puppy will be here Thursday. I have read that I should bring Max somewhere else then bring new dog in and then bring original pet in after. I am not sure., we do not crate train our dogs and Max kindof has the run of the house but we plan not to leave them alone but what should we do??

I believe I've read somewhere that that it's a good idea if they meet on neutral ground.. like say a park or something. Was Max ever socialized with other dogs? I thought if they were there would be a greater chance they'd get along w/dogs as they met.

Sorry I'm not much help

I also think its a good idea for them to meet on neutral ground.
Has Max ever been socialized with other dogs? If not I think your going to have some work on your hands. It may be beneficial for your to contact a trainer/behaviorist to get some more advice on the best way to go about this situation.

Yes neutral ground, meaning anywhere besides territory your dog see's as his. Have them meet at a park. Then bring them home if all goes well. Do not leave the new pup alone with your first one until you know you can trust him.

Ah, yes I agree----neutral ground... Also when you do get your puppy here are a few tips that might be helpful... =)

1.) Try to buy new chewies, toys, etc...for both dogs so they both (especially Max) don't feel like the other is trying to take the other's property.
2.) From what I've seen it is best to not just hold one why the other is in view. Try to hold them both at the same time or even seperate rooms...this will avoid jealousy..
3.) It might be best for them to have seperate food bowls too. =)) I hope you have a good time with Max and your new puppy!!! Let us all know how it goes.

Hi Papillon~

I agree 100% with all the previuos posts. When introducing dogs it is always important to introduce one another on neutral grounds (which would mean outside of your home). Your Papillon, Max, views your home as "his territory." Some dogs, after having lived in their homes for some time, view the entrance of another dog in the home as a threat to their already established territory. Therefore, many will become aggressive in an attempt to let the other dog know that he/she is not welcome and that "his home" is HIS territory, not the other dogs'. Not all dogs are opposed to other dogs entering their home, but some are. And for those that are, it takes time make the adjustment. Most dog owners that I know who have been in your same situation have succeeded in making the adjustment, but it did take time and patience.

For some reading material on this issue, you may want to look at some web sites. I would recommend you head over to google.com (or any other major online search engine), in the search box type in, "Introducing another dog into your home" (without the quotation marks of course). The search should come up with a lot of great sites that will further explain this issue and offer some helful advice.

Like nern said, a dog trainer/behaviorist should would also be very valuable!

Hoping things work out for you! Let us know how it goes!

(*Just a note: My dogs have their own of just about anything that could cause them to fight over...chews, beds, bowls, etc. Although they do share all of those items with each other anyway, I got separates of everything just to make sure there would be no jealousy and/or fighting problems. Luckily, I have not had to deal with that problem, but in your situation I would definitely recommend doing so. That was some good advice by ilovemypets)

Thank you guys for all the helpful posts. I will definitly try neutral grounds first, then bring them both to my house? I have another ? Max has the run of the house and I plan to keep it that way w/keeping the new dog in the kitchen w/gates. Max just has a bed, no crate is it wise to get crate for new dog or just a bed like Max, I am not a big fan of crate training but I know that it is very effective but w/both dogs I don't know. I pick new pup up on Thurs. should I bring new pup to park w/Max then bring both to our house would that be good or should I bring new pup in house and then bring Max in? I plan to get more infor but those sound very good. I am not sure w/the behavorist because that would be somewhere not at home, I would like to try to save $ w/new pup expenses that adds up fast if you know pup was expensive already. Again those were all good ideas thank you there is Max........

We have a 2 yr old rat terrier(Banjo) and we just brought a puppy (maltepoo) home also. Due to storms the night we picked him up we were unable to do the neutral ground thing. Banjo was not so much territorial over the house but he is very possessive of his toys. He does not want to share. Also, when we purchased new things for the puppy (Scrappy) Banjo takes them from him. It has been 2 weeks now and he may be getting a little better, I guess it will just take time. One funny thing...Banjo has standard size food and water bowls and Scrappy has small ones. They seem to always want to switch and eat from the other one's bowl. It reminds me of sibling rivalry where one is always thinking that what the other one has is better. LOL

Question for Mackie,
Was your dog socalized well (banjo) Max really is not around other dogs at all. He did not growl when you brought him home? Were they two males? I am getting 2 males, I am scared my girl friend brang her rat terrier over and Max had a fit (growling wanting to bite him) that is why I am afraid, new puppy is 1 1/2 lbs Max is 10 one pounce and bye-bye puppy.

Papillon/mom: If you call this dog trainer/behavior specialist he will give you a free consultation over the phone.
This is stated on his website along with his phone number. Here is the webstie if you're interested: http://smartdogtrainer.com/counseling.htm

He is in the Western NY area.

There is also the Behavioral Wellness Center located at the Cheektawaga Veterinary Hospital. I received free advice over the phone regarding my mother's dog. The behavior councelor was very helpful and gave me advice without pushing me to sign up for training classes.

Just wanted to let you know in case you were interested.

Best of luck. Be sure and keep us posted on how it goes on Thursday.

Banjo was pretty well socialized. He was about 10 wks when we got him from the breeder and we put him in obedience class. However, since then he has not been around any other dog. He was our only and there are no other dogs in our neighborhood. I now have 2 males. Banjo did not growl at Scrappy, just seemed very curious. He would smell and push him around with his nose. They both still smell each other constantly. THey seem to be playing around but Banjo weighs 25 lbs and Scrappy is 3 lbs. Scrappy keeps doing the puppy thing and jumping on Banjo or biting him so I always watch them because I am afraid Banjo could hurt him accidentally. On the other hand, my husband says they are playing and I am just worrying too much.

Thanks Nern for the website I will keep that in mind if all else fails. I would really like to try on my own at first by I will save that info. Have you ever gone to him?

Mackie,
I hope that my Max is as good as your Banjo is. Like I mentioned when my girl friend brought her puppy over Max was ver aggresive and that is what I don't want w/new puppy. But I will keep you all posted on my experiences. Thanks

I would get a crate for the new pup for when you can't be around. I always keep my new additions in a crate for the first few days when I can't be watching. This lets the other dogs get to know them and know their scent.

wow.. max is a cutie

like others said introduce them on neutral grounds.. also, try to socialize max some more. try taking him to somewhere that you can just sit on a bench with him and he can meet other people and dogs.

they say it a good idea to introduce your pup to two new pups a week

oh my god, rocco is GORGEOUS!!!

just don't forget that when you introduce max to rocco, max is on a leash. also, try putting something like a T-shirt with rocco's smell in with max's bedding. Vice-versa with max. it'll take a while for max to get used to the new dog esp. if he's territorial.

Here are some article links that I thought might be helpful for you. GOOD LUCK!!

hiya! i'm not an expert on this, but yes, id recommend moving his food, esp. since rocco may want to try it out and that might not make max too happy.

since rocco's been with you, how's it coming?

No, I've never gone to him but I picked up one of his pamplets at my vet's office for my mother when she was having problems with her Poodle. She was able to work the problems out herself so she did'nt end up going to him either.

Rocco is adorable!
