Hello again! We're new to this message board, but thrilled to see that there are other ShihPoos (and owners) on here! yeahaw!
I am curious as to your ShihPoos weight? When I first got Bailey they said that he should weigh between 8 - 10 lbs. Well, ha! he bypassed that a month or so ago is around 11 lbs now (haven't been to the vet lately, so not sure)... So, now I'm curious to hear what others are and at what age...(THANKS IN ADVANCE)

Telling the exact weight of a poo cross is having esp .Doesn't work unless you got it ! LOL ! Most poo crosses tend to be larger than their parents so parents weight does not play into factor as much as breeders like to spout ,neither does that thing about at 12 weeks ...double the size ...add 3 ...take away 2 ,bunch of nonsense .But breeders will go to almost any lenght to sell .I know ...I am a breeder ...but I have some sense I hope .
When breeding a cross this is what I do ...Example
mom weighs 8 lbs ...dad 7 lbs ...as in any poodle litter of toys you can get minis to toys out of the same litter so I add it this way ...okay ...mom 8 ...dad 7 ...account for larger than ...2 to 3 lbs ...gene pool pull 1 lb... Miniature Poodle gene add 5 lbs to at least one puppy ...toy poodle gene take away 2 lbs on at least one puppy ...average litter size 4 to 6 ...if under 4 add 1 lb if over 4 subtract 1 lb ...Now what I get is 6 to 13 lbs the average weight .How I got it ...I don't know ! LOL ! But i know this ...Out of a litter of a 9 lb mom and a 8 lb dad I got a 7 lb ,12 lb ,8lb10oz ,14 lb and a 18 lb set of MAltipoos .Breeders can't tell you what weight for sure a cross will be ,they guess ,it is a guessing game they win (10percent of the time or less depending on the breeder ) and lose the other 90 % ...I choose not to guess at it and give a weigh definate but an estimate based on all factors and the gene pool .A shih Tzu is much like a Lhasa or a Pekinese ...Short to the ground ...look small but when you pick them up they can weigh a ton ...That weight factor plays into the build and weight of your puppy ,nomatter what the size Poodle they breed it with .Also the toy poodle carries the larger versions ..MINIATURE AND STANDARD genes and can pass one down as easy as 1,2,3 ...So ,if a breeder says I guarentee the weight to be so and so ...then laugh out loud !! ...

Hi MonsterBailey,

Most shih-poos that I have come in contact with never weigh beyond 12 lbs. full grown. (Those are ONLY the ones that I have come in contact with, that is DEFINITELY not to say that shih-poos can't weigh more than 12 lbs.) After talking with other shih-poo owners, they always say that their shih-poo's parents weighed in at a *little* less than their shih-poo(s). Mickey & Tigger are currently 9 lbs., and according to my vet., they will not grow much more at all (if any), and at the most will end up right at about 10 lbs. (Granted that they eat properly and stay in shape) My breeder was RIGHT on the dot when she told us that Mickey & Tigger would weigh somewhere between 8-10 lbs!!! Mickey & Tigger's parents do weigh slightly less than what Mickey & Tigger weigh.

Age: Mickey & Tigger are 7.5 months old.

*Quick note: Simply because a "poo mix breeder" states what their puppies will most likely weigh when full grown, doesn't make them a poor breeder who is only looking for a sale! Stating that a breeder will "spout" off a general weight range for their puppy when full grown just to make a sale, is an utterly iniquitous statement. Maybe I am misuderstanding what the true intent of that statement was, but I personally find it to be a gross generalization for all "poo mix breeders." Just my honest opinoin!

Have a fantastic day,
Kristi

I did not mean that as an insult to all poo breeders ,I am one myself .I give an estimated range .I miss and I hit .The same as everyone else that breeds do ,if your breeder is on the mark everytime ,I am happy she has it down pat ,but I am human and I get it wrong and I get it right .But I also personally know some breeders that say ..."this puppy will never get over 5 lbs " and then it gets 10 .I am just saying it is a hard thing to determine and any good breeder should be as honest about it as they can and simply say ...Estimated weight is _lbs to _ lbs and this is the reason why ,gene pool pull ,crosses tend to be larger than parents (if only a lb or two ) average weight of parents play a roll but all of the above and more are the deciding factors ..........I do know a few shihpoos that are over 14 lbs ,I have one Shih Tzu that weighs 8 lbs ...I have one Shih Tzu that weighs 12 lbs ....I have a male that weighs 15 lbs ,all of these are not overweight ,my vet says they are perfect in health .Now ,if I breed the 15 lb male to a 12 lb poodle ...likely I would get 14 to 18 lb Shihpoos .Also I know good and bad breeders .To generalize is not what I intended ,I simply said that there are those that use any trick they can to sell ,including weight ..If a breeder can be 100 % accurate all the time ,I would truly like to meet them ,esp is a good thing to use if you have it and are a breeder .
If every time I say anything ,you choose to completely go in a different direction ,you must be looking for an argument .I will not do that with you .I have a vet also ,he has been one for over 30 yrs and in his office his staff is a surgeon and a vet for about 10 yrs and another for about 2 yrs and all say the same thing .We have discussed it often and all say that when you cross ,weight is a difficult thing to predict, because cosses have a larger gene pool to pull from and each one in a litter is different and so is each litter .

ilovemaltipoos~

I would advise you to carefully comb through my post again in an effort that you better understand what I stated in my post! It is obvious to me that you are lacking in understanding in regards to what I stated. (I am going to have to disagree I guess )

Have a great day!

I did not say I agreed with you on anything you just wrote .I just said you had a right to agree or disagree and you say it all, more than once .
Look ,I am not trying to confront anyone with anything .I just state my opinion and that is all .My opinions are based upon my litters ,those breeders I know ,both good and bad,and my discussions with my vets .
If you find that unconfontable ,I am sorry for you .I just do not need to repeat everything you say to make a show of what I say .
I am never offended with anything anyone says .Why should I be ? It does not affect me or my loved ones .Words are simply words .At least you are not like my sister that when she was young threw rocks ,now those offended me .LOL !
I am more than happy you agree with some of what I said ,but the picking apart of a word and having a long and very tiring episode about it is another thing entirely .
No 2 people ever totally agree .It would not be fun ,but episodes can get boring ,can they not ?.
I am not well physically right now ,so I may "spout off " myself every now and then .Pain does that to people sometimes .
As I said before ..." I never meant any insult to any one person " and that includes you .
I am finished with this conversation as it does no good to anyone .I believe the subject has been well exausted ,I know I am and I have surgery in a few days and not looking forward to that .I hope all have a great week and as always May God Bless ...

ilovemaltipoos~

Your words do continue to baffle me, I guess I don't understand what it is you are trying to say. I think this debate is just about dead.

Thank You & Hope all goes well with the surgery!

Ok,

This topic is turning into an insults exchange.

MyBabyShihPoo, you are new here and I will appreciate it if you could stop getting too personal with our members. There are more tactful/peacful ways to bring your point across without it turning into a patronizing ego trip.

We don’t appreciate personal insults here and your posts sure look as such !

Thank You

Thank you admin.... I was wondering if the unhealthy debate back and forth was going to continue. Funny thing is after 20 minutes of reading, I never did get an answer to my question that was originally posted! LOL (now i know why i haven't been one for message boards) hehe.....

How about I try this again...I might start another topic, since most people probably won't continue through all that banter. ANYHOW: I'm curious as to what YOUR SHIHPOO ADULT WEIGHT is. I am certainly not thinking my dog will be the size your dog is, I'm just curious of the ranges.... In fact, I should have asked: about when do they reach their adult weight?

Ilovemaltipoos... your original post crrrracked me up with all the math. It was actually quite enjoyable with the "add this, subtract that, average this" method I loved that. Unfortunately, I never got the weight of Bailey's parents so I guess I'm just going to have to WEIGHT and see

I was just funnin there with all those numbers ! Meant to crack you up .I don't have a shihpoo .I have bred a couple litters only .Mothers were about 10 lbs and 8 lbs...Dads about 8 and 6 lbs .Both times I got over 12 pounders in the litters with a couple abut 9 lbs at 13 months old .So ,I can't help you as far as yours go since I don't know the parents weight .But I can say this .Most are larger than parents though .How old is he ? At 11 lbs ,is he still under 8 months .I have heard they can gain a few lbs after even a year old and if neutered ,do expect for them to gain another or two .I have a Maltipoo female in New Jersey and she was 9 lbs at about 14 months old ...By the age of two she had gained 5 more lbs .Lorriane says the vet says she is not overweight .Just a growing spurt or something ,I guess .I told them to put her on a diet .LOL!

Bailey is 8 months old and around the 11 lb mark. I was talking with another shihpoo owner and his is 14 lbs (two yrs old) and then he has a friend whose is 11 lbs. So, I give up and am just going to assume they are just like humans and there is NOOOOOO TELLING as to what our adult weight is! LOL (especially mine after the holidays ha ha ha).

some shittzus can weigh between 8 and 15 pounds belive it or not. Go on the net, do a search for the standards of the shit tzu and the poodle (or your 2 breeds) then take the weight that is assigned for the sex of your dog and avergae the two breed weights out.
it jsut might work,

My Shih Poo Murphy weighs about 23 pounds...we didn't think he would be this big, but as someone else said, it depends on his gene pool!
