Hey
I just got a new Tiny Toy Poodle and she sort of doesn't have much of a personality. She hides from us and she won't play. She sleeps all day long and when I try to play with her--she has no interest. I don't know what to do for her--she isn't a very fun and I will be really sad if she is like this for the rest of her life. It is like she doesn't trust anyone--I think that the people that we got her from may have hurt in some way or something. I don't know what to do!

How long have you had her? Bailey did the same thing with us for the first couple of days... he was just nervous and not sure of his surroundings. Remember, they come from litters and so they are used to having their moms/brothers/sisters around them, so this is a HUGE change for them...and they are very lonely without brother/sister.

Bailey was very very shy at first and kept hiding under the coffee table. Just give her time and be patient, she'll warm up... she just has to get used to a LOT of change all at once!

Thank you for replying to my messag!

It has almost been two weeks since we have had her. She is about 10 or 11 weeks old. She likes to just hide and she has no desire to play. She will spend the whole day in her hiding place (the pet taxi or the closet) sleeping. I have started closing the doors so that she can't go into those places and so that she will have to walk around and get use to her surroundings, but then she will just jump on your lap and want to sit there and sleep. I hope you are right and I hope that she will snap out of it. The other thing is--she is not aggressive at all. I have herd her weekly growl maybe twice if I can get her to chew on a bone or something and then I will take it away just playing, but she won't growl if you annoy her or anything--she is like a little teddy bear--only she is alive and moves. Maybe she is just a shy dog. She isn't hyper active at all like most smaller dogs that I know.
It's wierd

Thank you for your comments though--if you can think of anything else I could do ---your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

A few thoughts:

~It is a GREAT sign that she will jump on your lap and sleep. That really is a HUGE step forward!

~Keep in mind that puppies (especially at such a young age as yours) sleep A LOT!!!

~Find a treat that she REALLY likes and coax her over to you. When she does come over to you, speak softly telling how she is such a good girl and so on (you want to speak softly since she is shy, therefore you don't want to intimidate her), pet her with slow and gentle strokes, you can attempt to play with her (No roughhousing though and don't get too riled up as that may scare her as well. Try tossing a ball, squeaking a squeaky toy, etc).

~Your pup needs to develop trust in you and form a bond with you. This is done through A LOT of one-on-one time with her!

~When playing with her, going to pet her, etc. be sure to get down to her level. Hovering over a dog (especially a small one) can be quite intimidating to them.

~Once and a while, feed her one meal out of your hand. This helps develop trust and brings her closer to you.

~Give it time!!! As MonsterBailey mentioned, she was just taken away from all her litter mates and familiar surroundings which is often hard for the puppy to cope with. Just do your best to make her comfortable and secure, and spend as much time as possible with her.

Those are just a few of my suggestions! I wish you the best!!!

Let us know how things go,
Kristi

Cheri was shy too.She slept under the couch whole day. After we play with her like chasing each other in the garden, she become more active..I have to play hide and seek with her in the house if it's a raining day.
When she wake up in the morning, she will come and disturb my sleep by licking my lips or bitting my toes.Sometime, just looking at her make me happy..She is so lovely..Same as yours too..

Hi, I'm just now seeing this post. How is your toy poo doing? Is she coming out of her shyness. You know once she does she wil more than likeley always be with you. She could just want to be around you and ignore others. Let me know how she is doing. If you need more poodle people, I can give you a link to a poodle forum I belong to.
