Hello to you all..Love this site! Full of information. My Question has to do with the rust color around the face. Willie is a eight yr. old black & white Shih Tzu. He has that rust color around his face and now it is on his front and back paw's. This happened around the time I changed his diet to a no-by- product food. The vet thinks his tear ducts might be clogged.I am not sure whats going on here. Could it be the new diet? Just wondering what you all have to say! Thanks Willie' Mom

Hi 2shihtzus & WELCOME!!!

I have one shih-poo with tear stains as well, and despite the fact that we are doing nothing wrong (he is on high quality food, drinks filtered water, etc) and there is nothing wrong with him as he was checked by our vet., he still has tear stains. My vet, and others I have spoken with, say not to worry about it since in his case it is occurring from natural causes. Therefore, I do my best to keep it clean under his eyes and that is about all I can do. The staining itself may not be appealing to the human eye, but I am not worried about that. (Although, I am going to try some stain removing products once I hear from my groomer and another member on this board...we'll see)

About the staining on his paws, the only thing I can think of would be fertilizer. Has he been walking in any grounds that have been recently fertilized? If so, often times the fertilizer will make an orangy stain on whatever it gets in contact with. This may not be the problem, but I thought I would make mention of it just in case.

Maybe someone will else will have an idea about what it might be!

Have a great day!!!

Hi,
I use a whitening shampoo for the stains on my shih tzu's feet and legs. I do also try and use a bit of it around eye area but it's harder there because I'm afraid of hurting the eye's. Make sure you purchase a good one though because the cheap one's really don't do anything but the higher priced one's do work somewhat after using for abit. Someone else I know has a terrible time with beard staining and now only uses bottled water drinking water and this has helped with the beard staining.
I did try the eye whiting stuff once awhile back, but the kind I bought really didn't do much.
