Does anyone know where to find an extra small muzzle for a 2-3 pound dog, or have any ideas on how a makeshift one could be made??? My mother's chihuahua needs one so that we can cut her nails (the vet won't even do it) and so that it is easier for her to get her shots. She does not like her feet touched, and she really needs her nails cut. I kept telling my mom that she needed to get the dog used to having her feet handled, but she wouldn't listen, so know the little beast has full run of the house. And their paychecks........ I just want her to be able to walk comfortably with out getting bitten in the process. They are getting really bad cause she has only been outside maybe 10 times in her life and she is going on 5 yrs. old. Any ideas would be great.

you can try this, , cut one of the legs off a pair of panty hose, holding each end of the panty hose approach the dog from behind and snare his muzzle, quickly wrap the panty hose around the muzzle a couple of times then tie behind his neck. Don't tie so tight that you choke him but tight enough to hold while doing his nails. This has always worked for me and my cocker who was the sweetest but never quite liked the vet.

Wow, sounds like a bit of a problem. I have never dealt with muzzles so I am not quite sure if they come in such small sizes. The only thing I can suggest is what I have seen used on some of the dogs in the shelter who bite when getting a shot or nails clipped. If you can't find a muzzle that will fit, try using a leash. Gently wrap it around the dogs mouth so she can't bite you. BUT, please be careful not to get it too tight!!!

That is the only idea I have, maybe someone else here will have another idea(s).

Also, after she gets her nails clipped give her a treat (a really good one the she LOVES) and praise her! (That helps to make the experience somewhat of a positive one)

I had to muzzle quite a few chihuahuas in my grooming days...and the size 0 they had was small enough...well for 5 pound dogs at least. My chihuahua weighs 2 pounds and I believe it would fit him.

Anyways if the size 0 truly is too small then you could consider getting one of those cone collars that they use post surgery. For dogs that small (or cats for that matter) the cone is usually much too large for them to do things such as eat...and in this case that would be ideal as they wouldnt be able to swing their head around to get you.

The pantyhose should work; you can also try a small ace bandage. If you still want a muzzle, try www.PetEdge.com

I think the biggest problem with Tiara is that she is so small. The vet never expected her to live past 6 weeks. Her muzzle is about an inch long and probably 1 and a half in diameter. She only has a 4 inch neck. She is about 6-7 inches a the shoulder. I will try the thing with the pantyhose but it will be a challenge since the isn't too much to catch it on. I am going to upload a pic of her on my Picturetrail today. It's not very good but you can see what a doll she is.
