Hi everyone, Im a new member from Melbourne, Australia.

I have a 5 month old maltese shih tzu cross pup called Riley. Im new to this not ever having had a dog before and I have lots of questions, and this seems like a great site.

Im wondering what the stages of tooth development is as Riley's teeth suddenly look strange - when do they lose them and when do they get their permanent teeth (I didnt know puppies lost their teeth, thats how silly I am).

Thank you!

They lose them over a period of months and go through the teething stage just as a child does .Just keep plenty of things for them to chew on like greenies and chews and they will be fine .

If they start getting their new ones in and the baby ones don't fall out they should be pulled. They can mess up the bite if not pulled. I know maltese dogs sometime have this problem. Oh, welcome aboard. Pictures are welcome.

If the pics are stored online somewhere then put this:

Of course erase (your UR) and put URL(properties)in place of it.

Hi Silka. I also have a maltese/shih tzu mix. She will be 10 months old next week. Her vet check-up was just a few weeks ago and she still hadn't lost all her baby teeth! She had a few loose ones in the back that were close to falling out on their own. Thankfully, she doesn't have to have any pulled.

I have a year old maltese/poodle too that lost his baby teeth much earlier and yet still has 1 tooth that needs to be pulled.

Just wanted to let you know that not all malteses have to have teeth pulled.

I just meant it happens in alot of different dogs, not that all are that way .It is really according to the dog and how they develope .You can see it every now and then when one has a problem ,just as in sometimes people don;t lose their teeth and have to have them pulled ,it just happens occasionally .

Thanks for the responses folks, its good to get all the views. I will keep my eye on Riley. I did find one of his teeth on the floor the other day and he is chewing lots.

Ill try that photo advice again too when I have more time. I would like to share some photos of Riley as I think he is a cutie pie, like your dogs too.
