This is supposedly the best dog food out right. This is what I'm feeding my two puppies and they seem to like it and are fine but I've been hearing stories, should I switch any suggestions? Are there any basis to the rumors about the quality of the food and the fact that it's only popular cause our vets get paid to push it on us. Could this be an Urban Legend??? Any suggestions and what would you suggest as a replacement.

I personally dont think that Eukanuba is a horrible food but I do feel that there are better foods out there for the same cost or cheaper. Not all vets that push Eukanuba sell it therefore I feel that some vets really do beleive it is a good food and that is why they recommend it.
If your considering switching I would recommend Innova if its available in your area. Here is the website: www.naturapet.com

I think your more likely to find it at smaller, non-chain feed stores. There are several stores here close by that carry it that I wouldnt have known about if I had not checked their store locator on their website.
You might want to take a peek at their store locator to see if its available to you. Here is the direct link: http://naturapet.com/display.php?d=stores-tab

There are quite a few excellant dog foods out there. But we use Innova also. We tried Eukanuba early on when we first got our dogs but one had itching problems the other digestion problems. Innova solved it all.

Good suggestion I might add there Nern.
Thats a handy dandy little store finder ya got there. I put my town and area code and it came up with the store I go too. I know of at least one other store I can get it at too. I think I will do a little roaming and see what I can find.
Wow I found at least 8 stores total!

Thanks for suggesting the Innova, I switched to it and I'm schocked at the difference of the ingrediants. No more Eukanuba for my doggies.

I use Diamond brand which was recommended by a very "particular" breeder. It's around $15 for a 50 lb. bag of maintaince formula & $20 for a 40 lb bag of puppy formula, they have 5 or 6 formulas, & you can look it up on the internet. My vet says it's very good. I don't think it's AS good as Eukanuba, but it's a lot less expensive. A lady that I know researched on the internet & said Nutra brand was the best, most nutritious she found, better than Science Diet or Eukanuba. I don't know the cost, but she gets it at PetSmart.

thanks Mini, I did get the Nutrapet Innova. It does appear to be the best dog food. There is only one store around here that carries it but fortunately it's right down the street. It's $12. per bag and the Eukanuba that I use to buy was about $10.00 per bag but 8 with a coupon which I always had tons of. I'm going to stick to the Innova the dogs seem to like it. Plus the ingrediants are recognizable and natural. Thanks for the help everyone )

Good for you, beautiful gal.. :0

Mini Mom: I looked up one of the Diamond brands and chicken meal bi-product was the first ingrediant. Not good. Sorry. No bi-products for my dogs. If you are fine with that then ok.

What I have heard is that Eukanuba isn't a very good brand. We are feeding ours fostersmith (the fostersmith brand not the other) www.drsfostersmith.com and sometimes mixing a little of the nutro (its naturaly or healthy choice) something like that.

Hi All,

I have heard no mention of the food my Abbey eats, it is very good. Check out the website; www.oldmotherhubbard.com
Abbey is on the Super5mix-Puppy, and she loves it.

I have been using Eukanuba for years now and had no problems until the last 6 or so months .Suddenly my puppies and mom's poo stink and is more soft .No coccidia or anything can be found ,so I tried Science Diet and it seems to be working better .So I am gradully switching as not to cause major problems with bowels ,but if this Inova is better ,I may try it also .What do you all think ,is it better than science diet ?

We have the Old Mother Hubbard treats at our local PetSmart and they looked really nutritious, so I bought some of the puppy biscuits. Sophie really didn't like them, so I didn't buy anymore. She would just give me this look like, "Am I really supposed to eat this? It's not really food!" Picky, picky.

As far as Eukanaba... I had been feeding her Precise up until 5 months old and then I switched because I had to drive to a Pet store much farther away to get Precise. She didn't really like it and would often leave it untouched. In addition, I could her her tummy gurgling all the time. So now we're on Royal Canin and I'm very happy with it. She loves to eat it, her stomach seems to have settled, and we're both happy. It was actually pretty funny as I switched to Royal Canin, because I mixed RC wit Euk to help her transition and she would just pick out the Eukanaba kibbles and set them next to her bowl.

I've got old mother hubbard treats for my dogs now. They seem to gobble them up. It was one of the most natural treats I could find at petco. i don't think I have seen it in a kibble form.

IloveMalts: Science diet has corn meal as the second ingrediant. Which is an ingrediant that many dogs are allergic to. You probably know that the first 3 ingrediants are what is mostly being consumed by your dogs. I would rather it be mostly meat and a better form of grain.
And the chicken-by-products are pretty sketchy too. Who knows what they are really eating when it says that. Nern has posted the natura site above. Look for the food search and click on sci. diet. Then click on each ingrediant to see what they actually are.

Thanks Puttin and Allison
I knew the first three ingredients were the main ones ,but had been doing well on the Euk for so long and most vets in this area carry it and push the sales of it big time ,I had only used Science diet once before with some Bostons that a lady gave me because she could not keep them ,they did not do well with Euk at all ,so I have them on Science diet and they do fine .I did look at nerns post and went to the site ,just have not had the time to really look around at all the info .Also looked into Flint River Food ,the holistic approach ...is that what it is called ? Anyway ...The lady there is sending me alot of samples to use to test .Have you heard of that one ? Right now I would try about anything to make sure my babies are the best they can be ... Thanks again !

ilovemalts: I would say flint river is better than what you were feeding, but it has some things in it that are slightly questionable. Like the fish. It never even says what source it comes from. You don't know what your dog is eating exactly. If you have a dog that seems to be allergy prone. Natura has a brand called California natural. Then there is natural balance which is good for allergy sufferers. You just need to narrow it down to what you think will be good for your dogs.

I do not know how true this is but a trainner at Petsmart told my husband today (I am behimnd the times ,have too much work to do ) that Proctor and Gamble bought out Iams and have been slowly changing the formula for Iams and Eukanuba since they took over .He told my husband that they would now eat more and poop more because of the by-products added .Seems to explain what was going on here ,so now we are changing ,just looking for the right one to go to .I do use Pedigree for the larger dogs ..Should I be looking elsewhere for that also ?

I was told the exact same thing at another pet store, that the quality of the Eukanuba has changed, so My puppies have been eating Innova now for about 2-3 months but I'm glad I made the switch. Innova is expensive but the dogs seem to like it and I feel better knowing that they are getting a quality food.

In my opinion almost any dog food you can buy in a grocery store is crap. foods like Nutro, Science Diet and Eukanuba are more high quality.
The Super Dogs team feeds Eukanuba.
I personally feed my dogs raw. That way I know EXACTLY whats going in.
Thats what they ate in the wild. Just think was there a dog food factory in the middle of the woods when dogs were wild? No.
Theres a bunch of unnessescary preservitives in bagged food to give it a longer shelf life.
would you want your best firens eating junk food all there lives, or veggies and meat with the occasional bone?

Heres the inside scoop on Science Diet and Euk. They provide vet students with free dog food their entire time at school and ask that they repay them by selling it in their practices. Also vets arent given alot of education on nutrition.
I also used to get free eukanuba when I worked at the vets and I dont care how free it is it made my dogs stink something fierce!
Plus how can it be such great food if the first ingredient is corn?
