I was making my bed this morning and I noticed little seeds on top of my comforter. The cat was sleeping there lastnight. Anyway, I took the seeds to the vet and he said they were tape worms. They looked like sesame seeds to me not rice. Anyway, he gave me droncit 1/2 of a pill to give her. I only had to pay 3 dollars for the pill. Ive given her the pill but now how long till they are gone and what do I do as far as clean up?? Also, can we get them, my family? Im also wondering how did she get these? The guy that had her before said she was indoors only and she is wearing a flea collar that he must have put on her. I dont have fleas or any other animals. I dont understand. She is only 14 weeks old. Thanks Christy

I may be wrong (happens quite frequently) but a lot of kittens can get worms from their mothers....since she is only 14 weeks old it's possible she's had them since she was born. And flea collars are useless...they might kill fleas around the cat's head but that's about it.

Nearly the same thing happened to me. And I too described them as seaseme seeds not as rice.

The seed things can be vacuumed up and shouldn't spread to the family unles they are eaten, so vacuum the cat's sleeping areas if you have toddlers around.

The pills are effective. I don't remember exactly, but I stopped finding the segments by the next day.

I agree that the flea collars are useless, and can even be dangerous. The cat only has to eat one infected flea to catch tapeworms. If you suspect that the kitten my have a mild case of fleas (they aren't always obvious) you should have those treated right away, otherwise the tapeworms will come right back.

Cats can also get tapeworms from eating infected mice.

Live tapeworms look like rice and dead, dried up tapeworms look like seaseme seeds.

I don't think she will get reinfested with worms from using the cat litter unless she were to eat her own poop. I would just try and keep the box extra clean. It would'nt hurt to change the entire litter box a day or two after the pill has been given as most of the worms should come out within a few days.
