We have a cat named Noel who is 7 years old. She has always been a house cat, and litter trained very early. Her box is in the laundry room, where it has been forever. About 6 months ago, for reasons we can't fathom, Noel began using the bathroom on the floor NEXT to the litter box, rather than in it. We have tried different litter, we clean and mop the floor, and still she refuses to use the box. She doesn't go anywhere else in the house, just next to her box. We even moved the box to the spot on the floor where she was going, and she still went in the floor. We are just about at the end of our rope... any suggestions?

Is she urinating, deficating or both? Has she been checked by a vet since this problem started?

I think you may find this site helpful: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/9352/litterboxhelp.html

Thanks for the reply and the link. Looks like a very helpful page!

She is doing all her business in the floor, defication and urination. She's a very good natured cat and her behavior remains unchanged except for the litter box problem. She hasn't been to the Vet since the problem started, however. Since it's more than just a urination problem we hadn't considered a medical root, but maybe we should take her in and have her checked.
