I'm not sure how many people are checking in on the new forum so I'm posting this here as well as there.....

Last week my cat Milo started coughing a bit. At first I thought it may be hairballs and started giving him the hairball formula and brushed him daily. After a few days he was still coughing and when I listened to his chest I could hear congestion. I immediately brought him to the vet who confirmed he had an upper respiratory infection. He gave me 125mg of Clavamox to be given 2x a day. This was Monday. Thursday came and he was still coughing so much. I called the vet again and he told me to wait a few more days for the medication to take effect. If there was no change he would change to medication to something else.

Here it is Saturday night. I just got home from work and gave Milo his meds. I feel so bad because every time I give him the pill he ends up having another coughing attack and the congestion sounds so tight. He's eating and drinking normally and otherwise the same ole' Milo.

Does anyone have any opinions for me? Is there anything else I can do? Can I put him in the bathroom with the hot water running to produce steam..will this help at all or is that just for children?

I will be going back to the vet on Monday if there is no change.

All of my cats just had respiratory infections, so I know what you are going through. You can put him in a room with a humidifier. It will help loosen the congestion. The vet might have to give you a different medicine. Most of my cats were on doxycycline, but the sickest ones were on baytril. Amoxicillin also seemed to work. My cats weren't coughing. They mainly had fevers and were sneezing.

He probably starts coughing from the stress of giving him the medication. If he likes to eat soft food you can put his medicine on the soft food. If he will eat it that way it will be a lot less stressful.

My cat just recovered from an upper respiratory infection two weeks ago. She was very sick for about two weeks with lots of sneezing, fever and a nose that completely stopped up. She didn't eat for 10 days. She started out on Clavamox and then was switched to Baytril. When that didn't work she went to the vet everyday for 4 days to receive an anti-biotic injection and sub-Q fluids along with an anti-histamine. This cleared it up quite nicely. My vet told me to use a warm steam vaporizer with eucalyptus oil in it. My cat loved being in the "steam room". It seemed to really ease her discomfort. Good luck!
