Hi.
I was formally known as Kayliface, but I tried to log in a little while ago and it said my name wasn't recognized. Anywho.

Pepi had a mucus/clear phlegm w/ blood in it come out of his bum after a poop.

He has an appt on the 8th of March w/ the vet, should I be concerned or should I just wait till then? He is in no pain that I can see, he eats and sleeps and plays normally.

What could it be?

Hello. Welcome back. How much blood was in his stool and what color was his stool? Does he have diarrhea? Did you notice any worms in the stool? If you push on his belly is he okay with that? Is he eating/drinking okay?

As for your previous name, I'm sure if you want it back you could just ask Nern how to go abou this. Although, your new name is fitting, being as you now have Kayli and Pepi.

I actually need some help w/ switching my email addy .. cuz now everytime someone replies, it gets sent to my bf's emails addy and I really would prefer for it to go to mine.

Anyway, his stool is sometimes soft and sometimes normal. He's had diarreah before, but not everyday.
We have one of those covered litter boxes now so it's hard to moniter his stool, but it smells REALLY bad, to the point where I want to gag.

Today, when the blood (bright red) was present, it was present in a phlegmy/mucus that was coming out of his bum after the poop, it wasn't actually IN the poop.

He doesn't mind being touched on his tummy, I pick him up all the time and touch him there. And he is eating normally/drinking normally. No changes in food/water.
He doesn't even eat treats so .. I am not sure what it is.

You should be able to fix this by changing the email address in your profile. To update your profile click on "profile" at the top of the forum to the right.

Since it's bright red and not mixed in with the stool he may have just eaten something sharp and scraped the lining of the large intestine which made it bleed. It sounds like there is not a lot of blood. If this is the case he may bleed a little for about 2 days (depending on the severity of the scrape/tear). If after two days he's still bleeding (you'll have to check his poops each time he goes), I would take him to the vet. If you feel better about it you could always take him to the vet tomorrow if he still has blood in his stool.

As for the diarrhea, you may want to upgrade his food a bit, unless of course your vet determines that his diarrhea is due to a medical condition. I wouldn't ask your vet for advice on pet food. Most of them are paid to say that 'so and so' food is the best.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Hercules had this. It was awhile ago so I was thinking about what the cause was and I want to say that he had a Urinary Tract Infection. ? I'm not 100% sure b/c thinking about it confuses me b/c I don't think those two tracts are related (urinary & digestive). But I swear that's what it was when we took him to the vet. Maybe they are related? It is 1:30 am here and I have a paper to write an exam to study for for tomorrow. Or today I guess it is so I'm a bit loopy. Have to be at class in 8 hrs and I have about 12 hrs worth of work left. Damn me and my procrastination.

sorry back to the point.

Hercules did it for awhile (little over a week) before we took him to the vet and he was fine so I don't think you need to worry about that.

I will get a stool sample and bring it to the vet. I mentioned it to him a few weeks ago when we were there and he suggested I bring in a 'runny' stool sample and they will test it.

So I brought him to vet and we got a fecal exam (with a sample) and the vet found nothin. But he still gave me two meds to give to Pepi just in case (in case what?). He wasn't very clear, even w/ my questions.

He gave me metronidazole and one liquid that says Safeguard Suspension on it.

He said it could be dietary, but why would it start affecting him 3 months later and not right away? He eats like a horse! He was 3.4lbs or so when we brought him in 3 weeks ago and he is now 5.5lbs!!

The trip cost me almost $320(CDN).

Any advice?

Hello. Metronidazole is an antibiotic which is commonly used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections and protozoal infections. It is used for a lot of different things, but he most likely gave it to you for Pepi's diarrhea. Vets will often give this when they have no idea what the cause of diarrhea is. As for the Safeguard Suspension this is commonly used to treat worms/parasites. Although, your vet didn't find any worms in his stool (not sure if he suspects parasites). I'd call them and ask why Pepi should be taking this.

So how is little baby Pepi doing? Has his diarrhea cleared up yet? You may want to try and get him and Kayli on another kind of food. There is a great food from Canada called Wellness. This is what I feed Handsome. However, there are other quality foods out there, besides this one.

It kind of sounds like he might have Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome. I would either 1) give him a food higher in fiber or 2) supplement his diet with metamucil mixed with soft food. If it is IBS it should respond to the fiber increase.

The vet gave him these meds as a 'just in case' type of thing.

We haven't started them yet because I need my bf to give him the pills (you have to put them in his mouth and make sure he swallows, I am not good at that!).

He still has soft stool, but sometimes he doesn't. Maybe it's when he eats too much soft food? I dunno, I don't have any answers. I just don't want to switch the food right now and then Kayli have problems, ya know?
Argh.

Fleafly: I can actually give him that? Is there an animal one, or do I just use the people one?
