hi,

this is my first post, and i'm looking for some help if possible. hopefully someones had this same experience and can offer some information.

last saturday, we bought a 10 week old burmese kitten. she's cute as a button. and very very sweet.

for the first few days, saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, she was like a dream... settling in well. eating the lamb mince that the pet shop specified. pooing in her litter tray. sleeping on our bed. giving lots of cuddles. everything. awesome.

but yesterday (wednesday) she decided to stop eating. she didnt eat all yesterday, last night, or this morning.

its like shes sulking because we go to work during the day. saturday, sunday and monday, we were able to spend all day everyday with her. tuesday, my wife and i were both back at work, and she didnt seem to worry (my wife went to visit her at lunchtime, and she was fine, full of cuddles, and had eaten almost all her food). but yesterday, when we left for work, she was a bit angsty, and then when my wife went home to visit her at lunch, she hadnt touched any of her food, and was overly clingy and very cryey. when my wife got home last night she hadnt touched her food again, and was still upset. my wife tried hand feeding her, but she didnt want a bar of it.

over night, she slept in our bed, and was her usual cuddly self, but still didnt eat. we both tried hand feeding her some meet this morning, but she still didnt want to eat. its terrible, her poor little tummy is grumbling and growling, so she must be hungry... she just doesnt seem to want to eat.

while we are at work, she lives in our bedroom (its her safe zone) with all her toys, her comfy box, food, litter tray, and her ratty rat toy (she loves it). the room is well ventilated and light, with dark places for her to go if she wishes (under the bed, in the cupboard). we leave the radio on very low to give her some background noise.

uh. i cant think of any more information...

does anyone have any solutions for getting a cat to eat? (aside from us not going to work, and staying home with her all day long)

thanks

pier

Hi and welcome to the boards.
She is lovely she looks so sweet and innocent yet in her eyes you can see a mischievious side heheheh.

You could try tuna or boiled chicken see how she goes with that if she is still not eating give the vet a call and tell them the situation.
Is she drinkg still as kittens become dehydrated very quickly.

Has she been wormed? Worms can can cause a lot of digestive problems, but are easily cured.

If its been more than 24 hours without water I'd try to force some water into her. But not too much all at once.

You can also try dabing some tuna juice on her nose or dribbling it on her feet and she'll automaticlly lick it off, this might tempt her into eating (remind her how good food tastes).

Hello. Welcome to the site. A kitten that is not eating or drinking is a sick kitten. I would take her to the vet a.s.a.p. if this continues. Kittens can go down hill very quickly. Make sure she gets some water. I would also get her another kitten friend, being as she is left alone a lot. Cats are very social animals and love companionship. I think your kitty would benefit a lot from having another little buddy to hang out with when you're gone.

If your kitty is still not eating or drinking by tomorrow morning, I would take her to the vet.

Thanks for posting her pic. She's beautiful and she will grow into those ears of hers.

How is your kitten doing?

If she still hasn't eaten or drank she needs to go to the vet. Cats can develop a life threatening liver condition from going 3-5 days without food. Her not eating could also be due to an infection of some sort. I hope she is doing better. Let us know....

Hi. Just wondering, have you taken her temperature? Does her nose feel cool or warm?
She could be getting sick, especially if she is not eating or drinking - that is VERY dangerous. If she was a warm nose or a fever (Above 102 degrees)that is not a good sign either and you need to take her tot hte vet for some medicine ro an antibotic.
Please keep us posted! She is beautiful!

well...

shes eating now. we took the suggestion of a number of people and got her a friend... another female kitten out of the same litter...

meercat is the new kitten.

only problem now, is pier (the first one) keeps hissing at meer. which is no good. pier still seems sullen and grumpy (like she did when she stopped eating... except shes eating now)

meer has a beautiful nature, and im scared that pier being so mean to her will damage that nature, and she'll get sullen and depressed like pier.

anyone have any advice on how to stop pier snarling and hissing at meer.

funnily enough she'll sleep on top of her when they are sleeping in our bed, but when shes awake, shes very mean towards her.

oh yeah,

...she's got a nice little pot belly now from eating, but shes still soooooo much smaller than all the other kittens out of her litter. (she was the same size as all the others when we got her, and not eating meant she wasnt growing)

but at least shes eating now. the secret (aside from the new kitten) was kangaroo mince. kittens love it!!!

Oh, they are so cute! I'm so glad you decided to get her a little buddy. The hissing is very normal when cats first meet each other. It can lasts days to sometimes weeks (longer for adult cats). Try rubbing both kittens with the same towel over their fur. This will get both of their scents on each other and perhaps make Pier a little more friendly.

As for the pot belly, it may just be because she's eating again and it shows more as she is quite thin. However, pot bellies can also be a sign of worms. You may want to bring a stool sample to the vet. Kittens very often get worms and can also be born with worms. It won't cost a lot to have a stool sample tested.

Again, I am very happy that you got another kitten. Things will settle down soon. I'm sure they will be great buds in due time. It's a nice thing you did for your little Pier (getting her a buddy) Keep us posted and thanks for all of those great pics.
