I recently got a kitten who was advertised as 7 weeks, (2-28-04), however, when I got him home I realized that he was much younger than that. The vet guesstimated around 5 weeks, (so about 5-6 weeks old now). We had trouble getting him to eat at first, but now he eats much better. But, on Sunday afternoon he ate a small piece of prime rib that I accidentally dropped on the floor, and then on Monday night he started to have the diarrhea. His stools are still very loose, and the only variation in his diet was the small piece of prime rib. I have been feeding him science diet wet food, and then last night, I read on this board that feeding him dry oven-baked chicken helps to harden the stool. He really enjoyed the chicken!! He still eats well, and drinks a lot of water (this has changed in the last two days as well, he hadn't been drinking much water, but now he gulps it down). He is more playful than he was and very energetic, so I am not sure what is wrong. I would appreciate any help! Also how long would the prime rib stay in his tiny system?

Has your kitten had his first vet visit? Most cats are born with round worms which cause a variety of digestive problemsm, including diarrhea.

A taste of plain prime rib won't hurt a cat, but you need to be carefull of any spices, marinades or sauces that might cause stomach upset. It has been three days, so I'd suspect that the problem is not related to that one incident.

yes, he went to the vet last Tuesday and they dewormed him. When should I become concerned? He is very tiny, and I have had kittens in the past who have died very quickly from similar symptoms. I called the vet this morning and they said he would be fine, just make sure that he didn't start acting different. The only difference is he is extremely thirsty.

Hi. Welcome to the site. Your kitten is very young. When you got him, was he still nursing from his mom? The reason I ask is that if he was nursing and then he just went straight to eating kitten food, that may have brought on the diarrhea. If he's still having diarrhea in the next couple of days I would take him to the vet. As long as he is not acting different. If he starts to act like he's not feeling well by not wanting to play, eat or drink then take him in sooner. As for the excess drinking, this may be due to his diarrhea. His way of trying to get some water back into his body.

Because of his young age you may want to get him some KMR. It's a powder (add water) that you can mix into his food and this will give him some extra nutrients. When I was fostering kittens I had them on KMR and they were so much healthier. I stopped giving it to them at about 10-12 weeks.

I hope your kitty feels better soon. Keep us posted.

I think he was still nursing when we got him. He's been on the Science Diet wet food since 2-28, and was fine until monday night 3-7. His stools started to harden up but now they are runny again. I tried him on the KMR when I first got him and he refused to drink it. He loves the canned food and I have started mixing it with dry food after he started to have the diarrhea. He's still acting completely normal, and when I called the vet they didn't seem concerned. I am a college student and he is used to my boyfriend and me, but my family came up this weekend, and I thought that maybe having a houseful of people caused him to get nervous.

Hi. There is stress induced diarrhea. This could be cause by having your family members over. Is there anything else that you can think of that is stressing him out now that your family members have left? Is he the only animal in the house? Do you leave him alone often due to work? Kittens get stressed out a lot when left on their own, especially kittens that young. If you don't have any other cats, you may want to get him a little buddy to hang out with when you're gone.

As for the KMR, it is to be mixed with water and then mixed with the soft food. I have yet to hear (until now) of a kitten that does not love the taste of this. Keep us posted.

KMR is good stuff, but it will make his poop a little runny. Do it like Chessmind said and mix it with the soft food so that the soft food is a little runny. Maybe he didn't drink it b/c he isn't used to lapping up food.

HE DOESN'T HAVE THE DIARRHEA ANYMORE!! I am so thrilled! He is so tiny, and I was very nervous. I am pretty positive it was just the new people being around, and adjusting to roaming around the house. Thanks you guys for all of your help!!
