I am considering buying a new vacuum since my old one is not working!!! I was wondering what vacuums people like. I want one that really picks up pet hair.

Someone on the dog message board bought a Dyson, but I have heard mixed reviews for them.

I recently got a Eureka WhirlWind and it seems to pick up hair quite well or at least much better than my previous vacuum. This is only my second vacuum cleaner so I'm sure there may be other vacuums that work even better...I'm just not familiar with them.

Hi Fleafly. This is funny, as I was going to purchase a new vacuum this weekend. Are you planning on getting one soon? I'll post again and let you know which one I got and how well it works.

I need to get one soon, or get my old one fixed. My carpet really is needing to be vacuumed. I want to make sure I get the right one before I buy though. I have been doing some research on vacuums, but everything seems so conflicting. Thats why I wanted first hand accounts from people I know I can trust. Surely more people on here have opinions on vacuums......

Hi Fleafly. I was suppose to get a new vacuum this weekend, but got caught up doing other things. Anyway, I have a Hoover Elite. Don't get this one. It's not good at all (which is why I need a new vacuum). The bristles get all twined up with stuff like string, hair, basically anything that is fiber like. So, for your case all that animal hair will just get stuck in the bristles. I suppose any vacuum you get that has those bristles at floor level will get all twined up with stuff and then the vacuum will be useless.

I would definately recommend a Dyson, I'm very pleased with mine. No bag, so there is no smell, its easy to empty and it is very good at picking up not only the cat hair, but mine as well (I seem to shed more than they do) without blocking up the hose. Mine is old now, but I know there is one made especially for picking up Pet hair. The only drawback is that they are quite expensive.

I don't mind spending the money on something like a Dyson if it will work well and last a long time. I have heard that the attachment is hard to use on them. Have you noticed that Starry?

I am going to check out the whirlwind and the Kerby. I am thinking of getting one in the range of 150-200.

Mine is a cheap Hoover and it works well for what it is. It seems to pick everything up, but I bet when I get something better I will really notice a difference. With all of my animals I want to get as much out of the carpet as I can.

I haven't had problems with any of the attachments, although the hose can be a little awkward if you are extending it a long way - for example up the stairs. The other possible disadvantage is that they are heavy - well mine is anyway - as I said it is an old one.

Perhaps you could find a store which would be willing to let you try one out, even take some pet hairs with you, see how the vacuum performs.

I have a Hoover Elite with the Allergen Filtration (12 AMP motor). It is now 3 years old and works WONDERFUL...really. It picks up the cat's hair great and I have never had a problem with it. I only paid $80 for mine

I am going to go look at vacuums when I go to the big city. I live in a small town so we don't have much selection.

A lot of vacuums have HEPA filters. I have heard that the filters cost a lot to replace. A dyson selling point is that you don't have to replace the filters so that the cost of the vacuum in the long run is actually less. Does anyone know how much the replacement HEPA filters cost?

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I am checking out each vacuum people have posted about.
