My sister's 3 yr old cat was taken to the vet this morning to get his vaccinations. Within 10 minutes of this he started throwing up. The vet thought it was just stress related because he was very scared about being there. This continued for a couple of hours after leaving the vet so the vet had her take him back in and said he must be having a reaction to his shots so they gave him meds to counteract them. 2 hours later and still throwing up lots of blood (7 times by now) and vet now says not related to vaccinations and to take him to emergency vet. So we did and no obstructions but that was all my sister could afford to pay for was xray's so now he is home and just being watched. The vet doesn't know what could be causing the vomiting o blood. Has anyone ever experienced this with their cat? Could it be stress related? Yesterday my sister moved out of her apartment and he was left in an empty apartment overnight (with food, water and his bed, of course) and then this morning went to the vet and now staying at my other sister's house because my sister can't take him where she is temporarily living. He really freaked out at the vet so I am wondering if he got himself so worked up that he started vomiting and then made his stomach irritated? Any ideas?

which shots was the cat givin??? was it the same shots that were giving the year b4?? some vets will give shots that cats and dogs do not really need (over here they do) when i take my animals to the vet they ask me which shots i would like to get them...i ahve had it happen to where my cats had their shots one year and were fine and the next year they got them again at a different vet and the vet gave them a shot that they had never had b4 and one my my cats was having a reaction to it nothing serious just shaking... but i have seen at some vets that they do not relize that the vaccines may be out of date and still give them to the animals and the animal gets sick..

The cat is doing better today and hasn't thrown up since Sat. night. The vet isn't sure what was wrong with him, he thinks that he must have been so stressed out at the vet that he started throwing up then irritated his esophogus and made it bleed. Thank you for your concern. I also posted a message about my persian cat. He's lost all his hair around his mane (neck). The vet thought it could have been ringworm but they called over the weekend and said the test came out negative. The vet says it could be a bacterial infection but he's not sure. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this?

Hello. I'm glad your one kitty is doing better. As for your other kitty with the loss of hair on it's neck, is the kitty itching there? Do you see any scabs/crusts/bumps/redness/flakes? Does your kitty have any allegies? Does your kitty wear a flea collar? Do you apply flea drops behind the neck? One more question, how much hair is missing?

We live in Utah so not much chance for fleas. I never see him scratch at all and he doesn't have front claws. The area where he has lost his hair is on the side of his neck up around to the middle of his back. It looked a little flaky but no scabs or sores or anything like that. It started out as a 50 cent sized piece on the side of his neck but that has filled in a tiny bit with hair so you can't really see the skin like before but where it is spreading up around to the back there are a few spots that you can see his skin. This is hard because he used to have a thick full mane. The vet called yesterday and now they want to do a biopsy for skin cancer. I can't afford it just yet so I told him I would watch him for a week or so and use the medicated shampoo he prescribed for him a chance to work,if it will. I'm really hoping it's nothing serious but I am worried that it could be.

Hello. It could be a lot of things. Yes, skin cancer is one of them. However, it could also be from parasites (i.e. mites), hormone imbalance and so on.
If the vet does a skin scraping he/she could look under the microscope to see if it's due to parasites. It it is from mites, the vet would give him an antiparasictic dip (bath) every few weeks for about 6-8 weeks and/or antiparasitic medication.

If it's not caused by skin problems, then they would next want to do blood work to check for hormonal imbalances. For instance when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroxin (a hormone) it can cause hairloss.
If it is a hormone related problem the vet may want to also take x-rays and maybe even an ultra sound to check for any tumors in the reproductive organs, where some of these problems can occur. If this is the cause it can be controlled with meds. Unless of course there is a tumor involved, in which case that may require surgery.

What kind of food do you feed your cat? Also, stress can cause hairloss as well.

I realize money is a bit tight right now. However, if it was my kitty I would at the very least have some blood work done (not very expensive) to rule out the hormone imbalance, as this can be rather serious if gone untreated.
You can just call the vet office and ask them how much blood work would cost. Keep us posted.

Hi again,

My cat has always been fed science diet but he refuses to eat the adult kind, he will only eat the kitten kind and he is 17 months old. Money is only a problem until friday so I am watching him for now. He acts fine, just scared to eat because my baby cat (4 months) is the boss and scares him into being nervous to eat.
