my boy Zeus has been suffering with "dire-rear" for a couple of days - he got some milk and I think that is the culprit. There's been no change in his diet or behavior...he's just got the squirts. When I first adopted him from the shelter (2 years ago in August) we went through months of testing cause he had "dire-rear" so bad his bum would bleed - it was horrible. Ended up being food related...tried all kinds of foods. He's been eating Fancy Feast canned with no problem for quite some time (he won't eat dry and if he does you can tell it's only cause I won't put something else down - like a kid eating something they really don't like but they are hungry). Anyway he started squiting again...I used to give him a little Kaopectate (vet prescribed) but since they changed the formula I don't dare. Any other solutions - I might have to start trying other foods again but I can only imagine that might make it worse. His health is fine...he just seems to have some food issues. IP: Logged |

I would consider adding dry food to his diet. I have always been told that it is important for cats to eat dry food especially for their teeth. He probably shys away from the dry food because he knows you will give him wet food. He has you well trained ;-) Chicken Soup for the cat lovers soul dry food has been mentioned on this site many times and I have started using that as well. It has many good nutritional qualities. I would try to leave dry food out for him and slowly lessen the amount of wet to see if he adjusts. IP: Logged |

my shopping choices are EXTREMELY limited around here - I would have to dry 45 minutes one way to find a quality pet store with a good variety of foods. Really - we have 2 grocery stores in the area and my there aren't all that good either...and I've requested they add more but they won't. I keep dry food out all the time (my other 2 cats eat dry fine) Zeus will eat the dog's food before he'll eat the dry cat food (my Shepherd is willing to share her dinner with Zeus - they are buds). When Zeus was a kitten we went through this too and I tried all sorts of cat foods (well kitten food) and the only thing I found that didn't come flying out almost as quick as it went in was Friskies canned kitten food (he wouldn't eat the dry kitten food but my other 2 love dit LOL...Zeus was a stray kitten picked up off the streets by the shelter so we don't know his early history)...now when I try Friskies canned food he turns his nose up. I've tried food from the vet (all varieties), took a special trip to the good pet store and bought bunches of different kinds - still flew out (and I would wait until trying each kind)...vet figured it was probably the fat content in the food since all other tests were negative (parasites and IBD). Had to wash the wall behind the litterbox this morning - YUCK. IP: Logged |

Hello. Is there a local pet supply store in your town? If there is, they will order food for your Zeus at no charge to you. Also, if you are interested in a particular food, the company may also be willing to send it directly to your home. I feed Handsome Wellness cat food. It's great food and he loves the taste of both hard and dry and he's very picky. Also, he may just have stress diarrhea, being as you foster other cats. Perhaps there is one or more cats in your house that are stressing him out? Or even a person(s) can bring about stress diarrhea. hmmmmm there's a thought - my bluepoint Siamese is the resident bully...she really laid into Zeus a few nights ago (she had her timeout in the bedroom for 1 hour). She does this now and then - she insists on being Alpha cat and even thought Zeus has about 8 lbs on her and his claws (her former owner declawed her) he'll squeal and she gets him good (no bite wounds but she pulls out tufts of fur). Yes Tilly is a bonafide bit*h!!! And come to think of it the day after she laid into him for whatever infraction he'd committed (probably looking at her) his stools were loose. Tilly will go for weeks within getting into one of her snits...but when she does even we watch our step LOL she even will go after my GSD!! She has a 'tude and normally she plays great with Zeus until she gets a hair across her butt. IP: Logged |

the vet suggested Purina EN food which is a moist tender vittles type food...have you ever heard of this stuff? And the price tag is $15/box of 8 pouches!!!! I couldn't afford it...really that is very expensive. I normally don't say no if it's something for my pet(s)' health but even the receptionist did a double take and checked the price she thought it was also very high. Anyway someone on another cat board that I've participated in for about 6 years has a couple of boxes that her vet GAVE her and her cat won't eat it so she is sending it to me. It's for gastro/intestinal problems so I'll see if it helps Zeus. But his stools have started to firm up. Maybe he won't need it (thank goodness cause I couldn't buy that every week). IP: Logged |
