Our cat is nearing 15 years old. She has started loosing some of her teeth. What can we do for her? She had some bleeding after she lost the teeth, but otherwise, seems quite normal. She is still eating, although probably a bit less than she normally does. We are in a tough spot financially right now, and a trip to the vet is really not in the budget. I'd appreciate any advice we can get.

Have a friend who has had cats as old, losing the teeth, and soft foods are the order of the day. Also, keeping an eye on the mouth and gums daily to see that no ohter problems like abcesses or fungal growths are occurring. Might like to still clean out the mouth with an animal rinse on a soft cloth regularly too. You must be doing something right for this cat to be at this age! God bless.

I just noticed my 12 year old cat lost his right eye tooth and a few behind it. The jaw seems swollen. Is it normal for a few teeth to fall out at once and for it to be this swollen? The vet's not open until Monday and I'm starting to freak. He's eating and acting fine. Any thoughts???

Shirley: We had a cat who was missing teeth and he ate hard food just fine, I think it depends on the cat. For now I would give her some soft food and maybe mix hard in with it. Check the gums to make sure they aren't swollen or there aren't other signs of an infection.

Brigid: He should be okay until monday if he is acting normally otherwise. It's not normal for several teeth to fall out and the swollen jaw could mean an infection. I would keep an eye on him tomorrow, and go to the vet monday.

Thanks Fleafly, I will get him there tomorrow morning. I feel so bad for him. I was thinking he might have had an injury to his mouth causing them to fall out. Thanks again.

I just had my eldest cat (now 14)loose a tooth this morning. After eating he always seems to be trying to dislodge something from his mouth. I THINK it might have been the tooth since it fell out as he was doing this behavior. He seems to be eating okay, both hard and dry food up until this morning. Although he was eating fine I decided to look up information regarding a cats tooth lose.

I did take him to a vet in August of last year and although she wanted to clean his teeth, she did say that they weren't looking all that badly and because of his age she didn't want to risk putting him under anesthesia.

So, to make a long story short, I wanted to thank you for the helpful advice. I will keep an eye on him to make sure he is eating okay. He really enjoys eating dry food, especially Kit and Kaboodle. I will know that something is wrong when he fails to "play" with it when I toss it to him. It is a game we've played since he was a kitten. I call it "Attacking the dry food morsals". I have four cats and he is the ONLY one who likes to do this.

Thank you so much for the helpful advice.
