Thats it. Tom has been banned to the outsides for good now. He won't quit spraying, continues to poop by the recliner, and has moved to everyother spot on our place....and still uses his litter boxs... I've had it. He's a great cat and all, but I've had to throw away clothes, sheets, towels...ect...I'mtired of coming home every day to a complete mess, smelling amonia...and scrubbing every single day all over the house!!!!!! We let him outside with us all day yesterday, and he was fine, explored, and never left our sites....we kenneled him in one of the big dog wire crates outside for the nite so he wouldn't run off and would be safe, He was fine this morning and he'll be home with TOm today to keep an eye on him.... GRRRR... I really wanted a house cat, but its apparent that he wants to stick to his ferral ways. He has a collar on with a tube id. plus his vac tags, ect.... IP: Logged |

hello there. how old is Tom, and how did you aquire him? Being an outside cat is NOT good for cats. i think you need to read up and educate yourself on cats if you plan on keeping him. If he is over 5 mo old, Tom needs to be nuetered. that is why is is spraying. i did not know this fact many years and 4 cats ago. this feature is a hormonal function which will attract many females to your door. Ferral cats in a neighborhood is not good. Tom will be much happier, safer, and much more loved if you neuter him,love him and keep him inside!! check out orgs on line that give discounts for you to give your vet for low cost neutering. I rescued Tom from a starving situation. He's neutered and was pretty wild when I first got him. We live out in the country and no matter what we've tried to get him to go in his litter box worked....I'm allergic to cats, but not to the point of not having one.... Tom is a grey stripped cat, he was probably around 3-4 months when I got him... I tried to rescue the other kitten and the female cat that was there, but I couldn't catch them. The vet said that once he started to spray he wouldn't quit...and he hasn't, and that he'd probably make a good barn cat. We've cleaned up all the smell...and tried all kinds of methods including the Plug in pharamone thing....He was outside and wild when I got him and I guess thats where he wants to be.. I still love him..but its been quite a while now and he just wont quit. I posted a while back about when I got him... you should read it. IP: Logged |

Hi Sam. It seems like Tom has some kind of anxiety and that is why it is still spraying. He may feel threatened by either one or more of your other animals or even a person. Even someone that comes to your house now and again or an animal or person that is simply outside, but Tom senses them. If you wanted to you could call around and ask the fees for an animal behaviorist to get to the bottom of his anxiety. I've read that cats with this kind of anxiety (where all medical problems have been ruled out), generally get better once the source of the anxiety is gone. I understand how frustrated you must be feeling. Once you simmer down a bit, you could take him to the vets to see why he is still pooping outside of his litter box and then try and tackle the spraying problem with an animal behaviorist. Well, we got alot of rain for the past few days, so I let him back inside....He used the litterbox, so I cleaned it out as always, and left for work....when I got home, He had 3 piles by the recliner....and had sprayed my cabnets, clothes hanging in the laundry room, and plants.... I called the vet yesterday afternoon, and took him in...He said that more than likely he's not going to give up his "wild" ways. I've thought about the people thing, and the only two that are home are me and my hubby...so that can't be it. He used to hate my guts, but has since warmed up to me. I thought about the dogs, but they are at my motherinlaws, when we aren't home...she babysits for us. SO what other animals are there??? I don't know. WE still love him dearly and treated the same, he's just going to have to be an inside/outside cat from now on.... IP: Logged |

It's sounds like you've had a rough go of it with your kitty. I think he's lucky to have people who love him so much and take good care of him, which, of course, he didn't have before. IP: Logged |

Well, he's stayed outside all night by himself!! He slept on the porch bench on the pet bed we bought for him. This morning, he got up, ate his breakfast and went and layed right back down.... He doesn't venture past the porch area, so thats a relief. We got a new collar for him that has a "snag proof" system on it and transfered his bell and ID tube to it....he seems to be much happier and calmer outside than he EVER did inside. IP: Logged |

Well, Tom seems happier and you no longer have to clean up everyday. So, maybe it's all for the best. I'm sure if you let him inside and he knew the door was open and he could come and go as he pleases, he may not poop inside. That way you still have a possibility of him being an indoor/outdoor cat. Just make sure he has a nice/safe warm place to sleep. Also don't leave food out at night as wild animals may smell it out and cause possible problems with Tom. Keep us posted. IP: Logged |

I have had cats all my life growing up several were outside cats and I do not feel that there is anything wrong with this if they are well cared for. my mom has a cat that i gave her,he is an inside outside cat,he's 14 very healthy and happy. if your cat is spraying and not fixed he will continue to do so, however you may want to try those soothing plugins you can buy for your pets, i got one bec i was having similar problems with my cat and it worked. i recieve the pet smart magazine and that is where i found mine.
