My cat Tuka (18) went in to get her annual shots and the next day she couldn't walk. The next day she went blind. The next day she could walk again but still couldn't see. For the last 2 weeks she stopped eating and drinking. We are giving her IV's and now she seems to be bleeding in her Throw-up and her stool. How do you know when it's time. We gave her a complete blood test and everything came out average. We don't want to make the wrong decision but when does humane become inhumane? Please help!

I'm so sorry about your kitty. She's getting up there in age and sadly a lot of different health problems can occur in cats at this age. There is a chance that she may have had an adverse reaction to the shots and went downhill from there, or she may have had a pre-existing condition and the shots made it worse. Adverse reactions can include lethargy, fever, stiffness, sore joints, abdominal tenderness, anaphylactic shock (an allergic reaction that causes swelling of critical airways which can result in death within minutes), liver and kidney problems and more . If an animal has a pre-existing health problem, vaccinations can expedite a decline in health of that animal as they are known to depress the immune system. Is your kitty at the vets right now? You mentioned she was on IVs. What does your vet think about her prognosis?

Thank You so much for your quick response. We are at the vet's everyother day and we are administering IV's at home and have been shown how to. Our Dr. says keep giving her fluids. He doesn't know what is wrong with her but we did go thru a series of anti-biotics 2 weeks ago when she went blind. Can our cat get better? Are we prolonging the inevitable. I feel as if it was her time God would have taken her by now. We are having a terrible time. What about the blood? Could she have ulcers? or the flu? I just had a baby in October and since the earthquake on 12/22 we have been all sleeping in the same room. Should we be worried about any sickness going to the baby?

I'm a bit worried about the bleeding and the fact that the cause of this has not been found. I will see if I can try and find any information on this (later on today, as I have some things to do now). As for your baby getting sick from the cat I would like you to read the link I have left here below. Basically, it says that although it is quite rare for a cat to transmit to a baby, in small cases it does occur. Just click on the link below and you can read it for yourself. I wish you the best of luck with your kitty and if you have any more questions we are all here to help you.

Hi. It's me again. How is Tuka doing? I did some searches on the bleeding. It could be so many things (including cancer) or even a combination of things. I would suggest that you get a sample of the next bloody stool that Tuka passes. Take this sample to the vet and have them run some tests. I'm assuming she already had blood/urine taken for analysis. Also, I would call your vet up and let him/her know that Tuka is bleeding. Unless of course they already know about this condition.

How is she holding up? Is she responding to you? When you look in her eyes does she seem like she's suffering?

I'm so sorry Tuka is not well. I know what you are going through.

You meantioned that she went for her vaccinations and then this all happended??? Could it be she's had a bad reaction to the vacs??? I know older cats can have bad health reactions, take longer to heal, ect...
I'm sure she's not eating due to all the trauma.
Get a second oppinion.....shower her with lots of love and attention.

I realized she was going blind when one pupil got much larger than the other. Then got cloudy. The next day both pupils were cloudy and large and she kept bumping into things. We set her next to the fireplace where she always sits and she seemed to enjoy it. Then that morning the earthquake came and it hit our home very hard. She didn't get hit by any of the falling stuff. When we put a finger in front of her she doesn't follow it. We think she sees shadows because when we turn on a light she looks. As for the blood I have been giving her some hi calorie RX petromalt from the Dr. We thought that maybe she had a firball stuck. It looked like that stuff was coming out of her. It didn't smell like blood but there was a lot of it. I gave her an inch and it looked like a tblspoon came out the backside when she tried to throw up. She is resting now in a shrimp position. She looks tired and haggard she doesn't groom anymore. Should we try to force feed her?

As for the bad reaction to the vacc's it looks like it but would it last this long? Also what do you know about the kitty flu? Could this just be an illness or an ulcer? Last night she messed herself and my husband and I cleaned her up and I held her in a towell for about an hour she seemed to really enjoy it. She has allways been a housecat and slept right next to me and when I was sick or depressed she never left my side. I want her to know that I'm there for her when she's sick and not to give up on her. As for a second opinon I really like this Dr. and there isn't many other vets in this area, none that came as highly recomended and this one.

The problem with the eyes sounds like cataracts to me.
