Hello!

I have 2 kittens the male is about 18 weeks old and the female is approx. 16 weeks old. We got the 2 at the same time from different litters. I know the female is a bit to young to get "fixed" but I recently caught the male cat "mounting" the female cat. He totally was trying to have sex with her. (please don't laugh) now the female cat did not move and I 'shooed' the male off of her. Anyways, I have no clue what to do. Is it possible for the female to get pregnant? Is ther anything I can do to prevent the male from trying that again (who knows if he does try when I am not around!) Anyways, I hope this isn't to weird of a question! Thanks again!

Hello. This is pretty normal. I think it's time your boy kitty got neutered. As for your female it depends on how much she weighs to get spayed. Your boy cat is old enough to have a trip to the vet. In which case, once he is neutered he will stop 'bugging' your female cat.

It is possible for her to get pregnant but not very likely at that age. Better to be safe than sorry....I'd have your male neutered ASAP.

At what age should my male and female cat be to get "fixed". Is it at different ages for them both?

They should be fixed young as long as they weigh enough and are healthy. I have had several cats spayed or neutered when they were 10-16 weeks. I would advise getting it done ASAP as long as they weigh enough. I think they have to be over 3 or 3.5 lbs- it really isn't very much. I really think the best age is about 13-16 weeks. They are still young, but big enough that their body can handle the stress.

Younger cats recover quicker and have less complications than older cats. Not to mention one of my cats got pregnant when she was 5 1/2 months old by her step brother who was also the same age.

KatieLeah: It really depends on your vet. Some vets won't do it on either sex until 6 months of age while others will do it much younger. My last male and female were both fixed at 4 months of age.

I get my males desexed at 10 or 12 weeks of age.
But I also had 2 females desexed at 12 weeks of age and both of them were already in season !
early neutering for the boys is easier than the girls. If you can wait with the females ( and keep them INDOORS) 4-5 months is a reasonable age.
The boys suffer very little, the operation is over in 5 mins, and there are no stitches. The girls have invasive abdominal surgery and my advice is to wait with the girls, til their organs are mature enough to deal with the anaesthetic. Often they require a night in hospital, when the boys can go home within hours of the procedure.

HI. I would just like to add that at 16weeks old she is not to young to fall pregnant a female cat or dog will not allow a male to mount unless they are in heat and by the sounds of things since she did not move this is the case.

If you are worried about her being pregnant or worried about having her spayed at this age then please talk to your vet about the hormone injection he can give her to abort the the prgnancy this way they will be absorbed back into her body naturally with no harm to her but this has to be done no later than 1 week after mating has taken place.

The chances of him mating with her while you were sleeping is also very high.
