Hi, I have recently adopted two cats and really need some help. One cat is having a fever and the vet said it is probably viral and cannot do much about it except giving her enough water to prevent her from dehydration. However it has been five days that she's not eating and the fever is not going away. I wonder if it's true that we really cannot help her with any medicine when it's viral infection? Another cat has some hairless patches on her belly. Initially there was only one patch and the vet gave Animax which is an ointment for ring worm. We've been applying this for about three weeks but it did not improve at all, and another few patches developed, interestingly all aroud her nipples. Also she seems not bothered by these patches herself and we don't see her scratching these patches. Does anyone know any other skin desease that would cause hair loss, but not itchy, and is likely to occur around nipples? Thanks a lot! IP: Logged |

Hello. Welcome to the site. I can give you a good web-site for you to refer to, as far as the skin condition is concerned. Just click on the link below. As for your other question, I would honestly seek another vet's opinion. Would it be possible for you to bring both of your kitties to another vet? Perhaps a friend or family member has one they like? It just seems like your current vet has not been of much help at all. Let us know what you decide to do and also click on this link below. http://www.nzymes.com/Articles/cat_skin_hair_problems.htm#itchyskindisorders IP: Logged |

I forgot to add that a fever and not eating for five days are not a good sign. It's good that you are giving your kitty water, however that fever needs to come down a.s.a.p. Are you by any chance keeping track of her exact temp? If at all possible I would at least take the kitty with a fever to a new vet tomorrow (before Sunday comes along and only 24 hr. emergency vets are open...meaning much more expensive). I would be very surprised if another vet could not bring your kitties fever down and treat whatever viral infection she has. Although, not all viral infections are treatable, some are. Did the vet tell you exactly what kind of viral infection she had? Also, put some soft food a little bit at a time in her mouth, as five days is a long time to not be eating. Some members here say to even use baby food as long as it does not contain any onions (as this is bad for cats/dogs). [This message has been edited by Chessmind (edited 01-02-2004).] IP: Logged |

Thanks for the help! We are thinking about change to another vet as soon too--these are our first cats and first vet, and just made us feel the medicine is not of much use to animals. We'll try to bring the cat to another vet tomorrow. Her temperature (underneath the thigh) is about 104 in the evening and a bit lower every morning, but not much decrease over the days. We started giving her Nutri-Stat today and just found she ate a few dry cat food too. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

You're welcome. Thank you for caring enough about your kitty to take her to another vet. Did the web-site I post help you at all? Another member here posted it a while back and I think it's a good site. IP: Logged |

Your kitty that is sick and wont really eat...the one you took to the vet and said that it was probally viral and said he couldnt do much about it...thats NON SENSE! A vet CAN give medicine like Interferon for anything viral. Interferon (liquid form) is an anti-viral medicine that is WIDELY used by many vets, and I have had to give it to my kitties on 2 different occasions. On top of that, your kitty should get some sort of antibotic, like liquid amoxicillin, that will help bring down the fever within 24 hours, once the fever is down, your kitty will start to eat and drink more on his own. A 104 fever is high and dangerous, the normal temp should be between 100-102. My kitties were hospitalized when their fever reach 105. I am VERY glad to hear that you are looking for another vet, because the one you went to really doesnt seem to know to much, or doesnt care too much. Please keep us posted on the progress of your kitties and congrats on your adoption! IP: Logged |

Thanks to all you guys. She started to eat a little bit this morning. We called another vet and the vet said if she started eating, better not bring her out, but let her rest and eat more. We will bring her to the other vet on Monday morning. Thank you. Will let you know what follows. IP: Logged |

Oh and thanks Chessmind, the webpage you gave is very helpful, I feel my patchy cat is probably having a hormone related skin problem. I've called the other clinic today and they do have doctors specialized in dermotology! Will bring little patchy in early next week for a check. IP: Logged |
