Does anyone know of anything I can give my cat to calm her down? She's 12 and she still hates my 2-year old male even though he's been here for 3 months. She goes crazy every time she sees him, hissing and spitting and growling (he doesn't hiss or growl at all, he just wants to meet her). She refuses to eat when he is around and we have tried all the tricks to try to get them used to each other. They are kept separated and my husband has basically said one of them has to go if they can't get along (the 2 year old, specifically). It would kill me to have to get rid of either of them and I think that she would have the same response to any other cat we brought home and we definitely want two cats (we lost one earlier this year to FIV). I would be willing to put her on medication in the short term, at least until she sees that he's not a monster and she can go about her business with him around. Any input would be greatly appreciated! (BTW, I have tried Rescue Remedy and it did make her somewhat mellow but did not have a huge effect). IP: Logged |

Are both of your cats spayed/neutered? IP: Logged |

I don't know if this is good advice but I would say that as long as they aren't hurting each other, I would just ignore it. I had an older female(spayed) cat who didn't get along with any of my other animals or family. She only liked me. She would growl at the other cats and swat them when they came to close but then she would go her separate way. I just let her do her thing and the other animals would just ignore her too. I wouldn't medicate her, it might just be her personality. IP: Logged |

Ask your vet for something to try. He could give you valium, or I have heard of dalprazlom (sp?) being used. Maybe that would help her in the short term then you could wean her off. If you want a natural solution you might look into the rescue remedies. Maybe one of them would calm her down. IP: Logged |

Hi There is something on the market but I really can't tell you the specifics. It has been mentioned on this message board before. It's a liquid i think that you put in their water and it will calm them down. I know there is something out there for anxious cats as I have looked into it before. Check your pet store. Maybe someone else here can tell you more about what i am thiking of. IP: Logged |

I think you are thinking of rescue remedies, they have different formulas and you can put them in their water. IP: Logged |

Another option would be to try the Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway. This is also supposed to be beneficial to stressed cats. IP: Logged |

I would hate to see a 12 yr. old cat given anything that would sedate her. Just give it more time, and I am sure they will come around. I have four cats, and when my mother passed on I inherited hers. This was sometime ago, and although my gals are still leary of this "guy" around, they have adjusted pretty well. IP: Logged |
