Our 4 month old Himalayan is lots of fun and soooooo good. We are so happy with him we are thinking of getting him a playmate. Is this a good age to add a new member to our family or will our kitten feel jealous. On another subject, we are thinking of getting soft paws for him. I would love to hear feed back from someone who has used these and are they worth it??? Thanks for helping me!!

Hello. Welcome to the site. If your kitty is an indoor only cat, then I think getting him a friend is a good idea, as cats are very social and may get lonely when people are away at work and so on. If your kitty is indoor/outdoor he may have other friends to interact with outside.

As for wanting to get Soft Paws, is this to protect your furniture? I've never had the need for them as I trained my cat Handsome to not scratch the furniture. However, there are other members here who may have more information regarding Soft Paws.

If you want to work with your kitty to stop scratching the furniture, here are some suggestions:

1) Use double sided tape on the areas of the furniture he likes to scratch. Once he stops scratching there you can remove the tape.

2) Get several scratching posts. Both stand up ones and flat (ground level) ones.

3)Get a cat tree. Cats love to climb and scratch on these. Walmart has them for $30. Great deal!

I'm sure other members will have other helpful suggestions for you.

At 4 months of age I think your kitten will most likely easily adjust to a playmate.

I've never tried Soft Paws but I know of others who use or have used them and think they are great. I think the real trick to them is applying them properly so that they don't easy come off. It seems that if you cut the nail too short or leave the nail too long before applying them they don't stay on as well. Im sure your vet could help you apply them for the first time if you have any trouble.

I've had good luck detering my cats from scratching most things that I don't want them to scratch by providing a variety of scratching posts....they really love the cardboard type and they scratch the floor to ceiling cat tree quite frequently. I have also used double sided sticky tape on my couch to stop them from scratching it and that worked well too.
