Our cat has always had one weepy eye and sometimes it looks swallon. I have to clean this crusty stuff off daily and even wash it out when it's really guppy in the eye. I have taken him to the vet regarding this and they say it's nothing~maybe a clogged tear duck or allergy(he doesn't sneeze)or conjuntivice. It appears to get pinkish in color at times. I am wondering if anyone else has an animal with this and what they are being told is the cause. I would hate to think he is in pain. The vet gave me an ointment but it never really gets rid of it. has your vet checked to see that the eylashes haven't turned themselves in on the eye? It is fairly common, can't remember the name for it but it is quite easily solved too. IP: Logged |

I have a cat with something similar. His right eye gets all gunky in the corner. It's a brown cust that develops by his nose. I took him to the vet for it several times and they gave me drops and ointments, it never really worked. I finally saw his dad and he has the same thing in the same eye. I figure it is a family disorder of some sort. I clean his eye out and put drops in it. This keeps it pretty clean. It doesn't seem to bother him, it just looks bad if I don't keep it clean. One of mine had conjunctivitis and had similar symptoms to yours. The ointment the vet gave me seemed to work...but I did notice latey some eye gook on her again. She goes to the vet next weekend. IP: Logged |

Fleafly & Nern, Does the eye sometimes appear swallon/puffy or pinkish? I think our cats just will be like this for life the vet said it could be conjuntivice and a virus much like herpes to humans something a person never gets rid of. To me if it was conjuntivice it would go away but this keeps returning week after week the crusty stuff and about every other month he geets the swallon giipy mucus in that eye I treat it and he is fine and back to the crsuty stuff. DJ..my cats eye was definately pink inside. When the vet pulled her eyelid back it was really red and looked very irritated. Also, her 3rd eyelid was out...and I knew that was a bad sign. Is there something in your home that is getting in her eye? I know some of the scratching posts (especially the sisal type)can cause small particles to come of when scratched and possibly get in the eye and cause irritation. Just a thought. IP: Logged |

My cats eye is never pink or swollen. Just brown crusty in the corner. I think it is a problem with his tear duct as that is where they gunk seems to come from. Hi! My cat had the aforementioned herpes in one eye. Still does, I suppose. It took forever (and a few different vets) for it to be figured out. But once it was, the ointment/drops REALLY work. It comes about with my kitty when she's really stressed. A new cat and a move have both brought it out. When it's in full form, her eye is really squinty and weepy. Poor thing. It gives her a kind of crazy/pissed off look... I really suggest a chat (even over the phone) with your vet about herpes (don't know what it's actually called) and giving that medicine a try. Betsy good, This sounds like my cats eye and I was wondering just what the name of the medications was. One would think if it's herpes it would be in both eyes.I will ask the vet next squinty eye flair up. thanks IP: Logged |

The medicine is unfortunately in storage (10 hours away) with the rest of my belongings while I live w/ the parents and look for a job... So sorry I can't help with the name. Since it's not exactly herpes, that's probably why it has only affected one eye (as with my kitty). But you could chat w/ your vet (s/he has hopefully heard of the condition...) or do research on the web to find drops for the ailment. I would bet all of my $$$ that is what's wrong, and though uncomfortable for your kitty, it is quite treatable. Good luck!!! IP: Logged |

I took my cat with the gunky eye to the vet today for something unrelated. I asked the vet and she said that it was a birth defect. It's called micro opthalmia, his right eye is actually smaller than his left eye, which I had never noticed. Because his eye is malformed, it gets gunky. His eye gets gunky in the corner, and looks a little hazy sometimes. His eye does look swollen sometimes, however, it is never pink. I just wanted to ask her to make sure my assumption that it was a defect and not an infection was correct. IP: Logged |

Fleafly, This fits my cats eye discription to a T, except it looks pinker to me at times. So is any medication recommended to keep it from getting so inflamed/goopy at times?. I have terrmiycn but it's an onitment that doesn't really seem to work. I will diffently ask my vet about this defect. If I recall correctly that was one of the possibilities the vet told me he might have in the beginning.that and conjuntivitus or clogged tear duck. My mail concern is that my baby is NOT in any pain. My vet said the eye just gets gunky it doesn't hurt them. She said they should be able to see out of it okay as long as it doesn't have goop. I wipe the gunk out of my kitty's eye and put in eye drops, bausch and laumb I think. He does very well with that regime. About the pinkness, maybe it is your cats coloring. Mine is a grey tabby his skin around his eyes is dark. Maybe your kitty has lighter skin. Does your kitty have one eye that is smaller? I can't believe I never noticed it on mine before, but now it is so obvious. As a side note, my vet said the condition is either a birth defect or because a cat gets an eye infection when it is little that prevents it's eye from opening all the way. I think mine has a birth defect, since I saw his dad and his eye was the same way. My vet said it isn't uncommon in cats to have this condition, the eye just doesn't always get gunky like my kitty's does. IP: Logged |

For anyone interested in knowing the outcome of my babies weepy eye: He had a huge flair up and we took him to the vet. It was confirmed that he has a form of herpes in one eye and told me that it is very common. A daily dose of l-lysine 500mg in his food will prevent outbreaks. Once he has an squinty/puffy/red eye I am to apply arethmisine(sp?)ointment. So this mystery is solved. No pain in what he has thank goodness. So let's see if he has a break out after the daily l-lysine. IP: Logged |
