Hello all!

I have a beautiful, 14-pound, one-year-old, white, odd-eyed male cat named Casper who is so loveable. We adopted him from the humane society when he was a kitten. At that time we had a 1-year-old calico/tabby female cat named Bella. Well, Casper loved Bella and wanted nothing more than to play with and be with her. Bella didn't want anything to do with Casper though. This went on for a couple of months, then Bella didn't come home one day.

Casper is now an adult, and I would love to get him a companion. I found someone who has a couple of kittens she is giving away in about 4 weeks (they are only 3 weeks presently). There is one of each gender, and I am trying to determine which kitten will get along better with Casper. So far, the kitten's owner says that the male is more playful and meows for his mommy constantly. The female is quite and doesn't play as much. I don't know if this will determine their personality in the future though.

I have heard that neutered males get along best, but some people say it is better is have one of each. I'm very confused!

Casper loves it when my sister brings her small dog over to play. She once brought her female cat, Lulu, over for 2 weeks while she stayed with me, and Casper loved Lulu and wanted to be friends, but Lulu just hissed and tried to scratch him. I really think Casper would get along with any cat, but I was just wondering what you all thought, through experience with your cats, which gender cats get along the best.

Thank you!

Sandy

Generally, I've heard its best to get a cat of the opposite gender of your current cat, spayed/neutered cats seem to get along better than intact cats, and kittens seem to be easier to introduce to a resident (adult) cat than another adult cat.
I've got 4 males and 2 females....all of them get along wonderfully. They all play with each other, clean each other and sleep together.

I think it depends more on personality than gender as they are fixed. I have had all kinds of mixes and never noticed that the way they got along was gender related. I would pick the kitten you like the most and that seems to get along with Casper. Maybe you could bring a couple over to see how they get along.

Thank you both for your replies. I am starting to believe that the personalities are what matters more than the gender. When we go to visit the kittens next week, I'll check out which kitten acts more like Casper did when he was a kitten. Maybe I will have better luck that way.
