Cleo and Amaretto are finally getting along and things were looking great, that is until I took Cleo to the vet as I was concerned about her weight. When we found her in June she weighed in at 8.5 lbs. She is now 14 lbs. After it appeared that she was gaining weight I switched over to a weight reduction type of cat food. The instructions said to feed her 1 cup per day. The vet told me that she could have no more then 1/2 a cup and that I should switch to a "science diet" type food that has many studies to back up its results.

I feel terrible, she told me that Cleo was now at a serious health risk. I did my research and the food I was feeding her is considered on of the top 3 in good cat food. The vet told me that the measurments on the bags are mostly wrong as the company wants you to feed them more so you go though thr food quicker so you have to buy more. Amaretto's weight was fine and here is the new problem. Cleo does not like the fact that she has to eat less. She now cries all day for food and I caught her eating Amaretto's food today. For the first time in months Cleo actually attacked Amaretto again and tried to keep her away from her dish.

Can anyone help me out with this? Any suggestions on how to spread out the 1/2 cup so Cleo doesn't feel hungry?

Im sorry to hear this....
Maybe you can start with 4 meals consisting of 1/8cup each? I know, 1/8 cup is like a mouthful but maybe 3 - 4 small meals will help keep her satisfied better than 1 or 2 larger ones.
I am in a similar sitution...the stray I took in went from 7 lbs. to 11 1/2 lbs. in six months. She looked like a cow. For the past few months I've been feeding a lower calorie food. I put 1/2 cup in each bowl for 6 cats daily. They are free to pick at it all day but once its gone I do not refill until the next day. I also split a 5.5 oz can of food between the six of them each day and this seems to help keep them satisfied.
Good luck.

Kaliface: Your cat is a kitten, right? Kittens grow quickly so this sounds okay to me. When Hoggle was a kitten he weighed 2 lbs. at his first vet visit and 4 lbs. at his second visit which was a month later.

Geez you guys have little cats! My girl's name is Sonia and she weighs about 12 lbs. She's a little overweight but not too much. My boy is Bruce and he is just a really big cat...not big as in fat but big in overall stature. He weighs about 20 lbs and is also only slightly overweight. They are from the same litter...I guess they had large parents. They are both on Iams weight control formula and it seems to help.

Mine are all full grown now....my smallest cat weighs 8 lbs. and my largest weighs about 15 lbs. (he is a little overweight as well). My grandmothers cat is very large but also obese and currently weighs 26 lbs and this is after he lost a few...at one point he weighed 31 lbs! He is the biggest house cat I've ever seen.
