hi ,,, i would have to advice to take your cat to the vet there maybe nothing wrong but there is the chance of it being a sign of a chest infection. or there maybe some kind of blockage in its airway.
your vet will be able to quickly rule out anything serious, as you should not be able to hear a ratlling noise when she purrs how old is your cat

I wanted to know if this "sound" when the cat breathes is something that just came about or has been happening for a while. You do have to be aware of what is called "cat flu" it affects the respirtory system and causes a rumbling sound, close to a purr when the cat breathes. My cat had the cat flu, thank the Lord he survived the illness, but there were lasting consequences. He had the "flu" more than two years ago and since then he has this purring sound when he is breathing, most ofthe time when he is sleeping you notice it more, the vet told us it was a result of the flu and most likely he will have it all his life, he is an otherwise healthy cat and has passed all exams and tests since his bout with the "flu". But be aware, some cats may not make it thru the ilness, it is best to get your cat checked by a vet to be on the safe side.
