We have been feeding our cats Meow Mix for quite some time (several years) and recently heard that this may not be the best choice.

Any suggestions for other food options would be greatly appreciated as we don't know whether or not to trust advice we get at the vet or pet shop.

Thank you!
Chris, Mary, Lucky, Foster and Yoda!

PS-2/3 cats are quite plump (boy 17lbs., girl 13lbs)

My cats do really well on Innova.
Some other good or decent choices (IMO)are:
I have included their websites in case you want to see if any of them are available in your area...most of the sites have store locators on them.

Wellness - www.oldmotherhubbard.com
Royal Canin - www.royalcanin.us
California Natural or Healthwise (made by the same company as Innova) - www.naturapet.com
Nutro Natural Choice - www.nutroproducts.com
Pinnacle - www.avoderm.com
Eagle Pack - www.eaglepack.com
Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul - www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com

P.S. Vets and Pet Shop owners/worker's opinions on the "best" foods seem to vary just as widely as pet owners opinions do. My vet thinks Innova is an excellent food...while other vets tend to think highly of Science Diet or Iams. Just depends on who you ask I guess.
Good luck on finding a new food.

I feed my cats regular old Purina. They have always been extremely healthy and lived long lives. I asked my vet recently b/c I have heard so much talk about natural and specialty cat foods. She said she feeds her animals Purina. If its good enough for my vet, it's good enough for me.

I feed my cat IAMS and was told by the Humane Society and local vet that it's good and that cats poop less when eating it because it's rich with nutrients. Or somethin like that

thanks everyone!

This has been an on-going concern for us. Like all of you, our cats are like our children (we have no "real" children...yet). They have no control over that but we do. We just want the best of the best.

thanks again!!!

Us and the cats

I gave mine Iams canned kitten food, but they would never eat dry Iams, regular or kitten formula. Wal-Mart has a good brand called Maxx Nutrition, but my cats like Purina better. I think every pet is different and different foods work for different ones. As people we don't like certain foods, I think its the same with animals.

I used to feed my wonderful cat Iams, until I discovered what that company does to their lab animals (cats and dogs). They keep the animals in small cages for their entire life and remove their voices so they can't meow or bark. The conditions in which these animals live is really sad and for that reason I won't purchase Iams or any other pet food company that does this kind of cruel and needless research.

Chessmind, that is awful what IAMS does!! I have never heard anything about that before though. Where did you hear about it, and is there proof that this is true?

I am in the process of trying out new pet foods. So far the best one has been Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. I will report back when we are finished. I am trying to give each food for a week or two so I can see the difference. Right now we are on Nutro Maxx.

Fleafly: How do they like the Nutro Max? My cats would hardly touch the dry Nutro when I tried it, I tried the Natural Choice and the Max. They loved the canned Nutro though.

Mandy, I beleive there were video clips and info. about it on the PETA website. Someone on another board emailed Iams regarding these claims and posted their reply. The Iams Company claimed that they were unaware of the treatment until they made an unannounced visit and that the treatment of animals at that particular facility was not up to their high standards and has since been shut down.
So, I beleive this is true...at least to some extent.

Wow thanks Nern. That is so awful, I am glad I don't use their food. Here people are trying to find the best foods for their cat, many vets recommend Iams, and the whole time they're abusing animals while selling their food, that is just terrible and sickening. I will never buy their food now.

I wasn't sure they would like it b/c the kibbles are so different. Nutro max has big fish shaped pieces and they have never had anything like that before. They are eating it but they aren't eating as much as they usually do. I'm not sure if it is b/c they don't like the kibbles or it has more nutrients so they are eating less of it. So far none of the cats look like they are on a hunger strike anyway.

They really like Maxximum Nutrition, but their coats didn't look as good.

I wanted to try Authority but when I made the trek to the big city Petsmart was out of it. I got a bag of Authority hairball formula for my kitty with IBS and she loves it. I really want to try the regular kind with my other cats.

For dry food, we have been feeding our 3 kittens Maxximum Nutrition kitten formula since day #1. They eat it right up and their coats are soft and gorgeous. We recently began mixing their kitten food with a little bit of the Maxximum Nutrition adult hairball formula, which seems to have really helped with the hairballs. For wet food, we were giving them Iams kitten formula, but 2 of the kittens started snubbing it after eating it for 3 months. We are trying out Purina Pro Plan chicken & liver kitten formula, which they seem to like... more than twice as expensive, though.

Our vet recommended purina one, which we have since used. Most of our cats have nice, shiny coats and are in good health.

Royal Canin is a wonderful food and makes a big difference in the health of your cat (when compared to junk food like Meow Mix). Anyone who switches to a quality food, particularly something of a quality like Royal Canin, Science Diet or Nutro, will see an obvious change for the better in their pet. I know that my cat's coat is much, much glossier, his black fur is jet black (black coats that look too brownish are a sign of poor nutrition), his eyes gleam and his litterbox stays much cleaner (what goes in has everything to do with what comes out).
