Last night my little kitty Oreo got caught in our treadmill. The conveyor belt completely scalped his front right leg about 1-inch long and .5-inch wide and right to the bone. He was screaming and couldn't pull himself out so we yanked the emergency cord that completely shut down the exercise machine. A massive amount of blood poured out so we elevated his leg and put a lot of pressure on it to clot. It took over a half hour to clot and we took him to the vet. We are afraid of seeing his leg amputated since there is not enough skin on the leg for stitches. Someone please respond if you've experienced this. I don't know what to do and am waiting for the vet's response as well.

Oh my God, I am so sorry to hear that, your poor kitty, how awful that must have been for you all to go through.

I'm sorry, but I've never had any experience with this, your best bet is to follow the vets instructions. If you find a good vet, they should not make your poor kitty suffer in waiting, they should take action immediately. I would contact another vet right away for a second opinion if your other vet doesn't respond in a timely manner.

I hope Oreo gets better soon, best of luck. Keep us posted.

Oreo is doing much better! We went to one vet who was not going to perform the surgery until Monday Sept 8th. So we decided to leave Oreo there as we shopped around for someone better. We found a vet who was nicer, more compassionate and cheaper. As we drove to pick up Oreo from the first vet he said he was gong to charge us for board. It was ridiculous since Oreo was there for no more than one hour! As irrate as we were the vet decided to just give him to us as we already gave him the examination fee of $35 (not very thorough I might add). We arrived atthe second vet 5 minutes late but it turned out she already closed shop as we banged on the door with Oreo in his kitty cab. An elderly lady came running out of her house next door pronouncing she is the doctor and was waiting to see Oreo. She was really gentle with him and didn't rip us off wih the pricing for surgery. She actually performed the surgery after hours!

My fiance and I assisted her with the irrigating and suture. Very scary, but she said since her staff is gone and it was only the three of us and if we want Oreo to get better tonight we would need to help her with her tools. Oreo stayed with her kennel overnight and no charge for board.

Oreo wears a huge bandage and hospital tape around the leg and a collar that looks like a lamp shade but he's doing much better and is walking/hoping around. He's eating and drinking but not using the litter as much as normally would (a side effect of the clindamycin?).

We bought our kitty back to my mother's and she changed the dressing for him again (it was falling off because he was trying to walk around during the car ride home). It's just another 24 hours before the vet says he can have the bandages completely off.

Thanks for the response! We'll keep updated on his progress.

I'm so glad to hear that Oreo is doing so much better, and also happy to hear that you took him to a different vet. I took my cats to a vet ONE time that was like that, no compassion whatsoever, and that was the last time we ever went to him.

It sounds like you found a great vet, and I think it's neat that you were in there helping for the surgery, at least you know he got the best care possible.

Thanks for the update, great news for you guys!
