I have had my cat for about 1-1/2 years. I got her as a kitten from the pet shop. She just recently developed fleas, but has never been outdoors. I have lived in the same place with the cat for about the same length of time without fleas until just recently. How is she getting fleas? We have no other pets. I live where we have had a lot of heavy rains and the basement has flooded twice. The basement is very damp. She also just recently found her way from the basement into the crawlspace under the house. Could the dampness downstairs or her being in the damp crawlspace have played any part in her getting the fleas - the cat and my house have been overcome with them in only a two week period of time. Sorry if my questions sound crazy, but I have never had to deal with this before and don;t understand how this got so bad, so quickly if she has not been outdoors.

Thanks for your help

I'd expect that being a crawl space is just as good a place to get fleas as outdoors. Especially if you ever get rodents in the basement or under the house. Fleas can transfer from mice or rats to cats just by going into the same places.

You can also carry fleas in on your clothes.
