A little background here... we have a five year old half-siamese named Ariel. Last December, we got a Tortie kitten named Jessie. they are both female. well Ariel adopted Jessie as her own kitten from day one. She would clean her frequently, they would sleep together, basically did everything together for the past 8 months.

last saturday we had to take Jessie in for emergency surgery, as she had somehow ingested a foot and a half of packing tape!!

we got her back from the vet on tuesday, and on Wednesday we let Ariel in the room to see her.

well she took one look at her, and hissed, and ran out. and she has done that both other times we tried to put them together since then.

can she have forgotten her kitten in five days? has anyone else had a similar experience to this?

I have never had two cats get along as well as these two do, and now I'm worried they will never be the same

Maybe it's just the "smell" on your kitten that she doesn't like. Maybe she smells like the vet, not what your older cat is used to? I would keep them together as much as possible to reaquaint them, but also so no more time goes by with them apart from each other. Hope this helps!

yeah the smells thing occured to me too... I hope that's all it is!!

we can't put them together too much right now as jessie is still on restricted activity (so confined to one room)

I am just hoping that once we can let her out they will be ok

I also bet it's the smell. Especially because the one cat came from the vet (which I would guess doesn't smell plesant to cats and they're very sensitive to smells).

Is the cat too fragile for a bath? (I would have to guess that a bath is out of the question.) I don't know if that would help, but it would get the hospital smell off.

I'm glad the cat survived eating packing tape. My cat ingested an earplug and it was an experience getting the surgery done!

I hope the kitty recovers well and the two get along again.

yeah they said no "water activites" (as if our cat goes swimming a lot? ) and she is not all too keen on baths to begin with.

I know they sell pet wipes at the pet store, maybe I could wipe her off with one of those...

yes we are very lucky that she survived I think!! I am very careful about keeping things away from them like string, ribbon, rubber bands, floss, tinsel, etc.

who would have guessed she would eat packing tape!

I took one of my kitties to the vet to be shaved. He came home the same day and all the other cats were hissing at him. After a few days they settled down. I have had the same experience whenever one gets a procedure done at the vets, spaying etc... The other cats always hiss at first, then they realize it is the same cat and calm down. I'm sure they smell funny b/c of the medical stuff that vet did to them.

Yeah same experiance with bringing a cat home from the vet. I buy those dry wipes and give ALL of them a wipe with it so they all smell the same. Seems to work very well.

you might try this-take a towel and put it next to your recovering kitty to get its new scent on it, do the same for your other cat, then switch the towels. So, your recovering cat will be reinforced and comforted by the smell of your older cat on the towel it sleeps next to, and the ticked off kitty will get used to the scent your recovering kitty gives off, so when they finally meet each other again, things might go more smoothly.
