Shadow my 14 years old cat went in for a check up and we found he had signs of a kidney infection. His kidney level was 3.4. We gave him antibiotics for 14 days (2times a day) and brought him back for a check up this past Monday. The infection seems to be cleared but now his kidney level is up to 4.5???? He's been eating KD food from the Doctor since his first visit. I can not understand why his levels would rise when we're taking the right actions? He also had x-rays and an ultrasound when we first brought him in, and his organs seemed to be the right size and shapes. Can anyone provide some insight? I don't understand what is happening.

Kidney function is measured primarily by levels of creatinine and urea. Creatinine is a waste product made by the muscles and excreted by the kidney. The creatinine level in blood depends on the amount of creatinine muscles produce and the ability of the kidneys to excrete waste. As numbers go higher, it indicates worsening kidney function. It has nothing to do with the diet, but measures strictly the kidney function. Oftentimes you see a low protein diet and high calories, but it can be harmful too. Too high protein can be harmful too. It's to do about moderation, maintaining/warding off disease progression, and in some irregardless of the measures taken, it advances. Palliative care becomes the mainstay. God bless.

I adopted a pregnant stray kitty who ended up having seven kittens. She developed kidney problems and the vet suggested we put her down. I refused. We had to feed her k/d food and give her fluid under the skin every day for about a month. She got better and is doing wonderful now. Just some words of encouragement. Hope it helps.

Would you happen to remember what your cats kidney level was when they suggested putting her down?
