I recently brought a kitten into my home that holds two other cats. Three days after bringing the kitten home, I came home to find him collapsed, barely breathing. I took him to the vet and was told that he was probably malnourished, but she couldn't be sure. The kitten had not ate during the day at all. I brought him home from the vet and was told that he may not make it. My poor little kitten did not make it, he died in my arms on Saturday morning. I am so worried right now that my other cats have caught something from the kitten. My older cat seems to be very distant today, not eating and I don't think he has drank anything all day. I have an appointment for the both of them tomorrow. But am worried about dehydration. Could one day of not drinking water affect them badly? Does anyone think that it may be distemper? Any advice would be helpful. Also, I don't have a thermometer, is there any way I can tell if my cats have a fever? Thank you so much. IP: Logged |

It is absolutely imperative that any new addition to a home be isolated/quarantined and vet-checked and bathed or the resultant worry unfortunately. You're not alone, we've all done that at one time or another. Cats can have many illnesses that we don't see with the naked eye, even for a vet until symptomology shows up. I would get some Pedialyte from the grocery store's baby section, and give them some along with baby food in a barrel of a syringe to the mouth (no needle of course). This will help keep the hydration to some degree. Hopefully no illness. Don't force the food, but do give the liquid. Don't want any aspirated in the lungs if they fight you. You also worry about distemper, so my guess is they haven't been immunized as well? If not, the vet will guide you. Sometimes when a warm dry nose is seen/felt, they have a fever. And yes, if no water, with a fever, they can dehydrate quickly. However, my guess is, you're feeling pretty bad right now, and try not to beat yourself up about having introduced a new cat to your others and worrying. Nothing indeed may be wrong.
